“It’s kind of been a problem for us all year,” right guard T.J. Lang said. “Our defense has hid a lot of our flaws on offense for us winning some games for us. Offensively, we’ve got to find a way to get better in the run game, protection, getting guys open, whatever it is.”

Since the last 5:00 of the season this past January.

Last night was hard to watch, but doesn't have to be the end of the world. That is, IF the issues that were obvious are diagnosed and changes made to fix them. One thing I've noticed (and I know others have too) is the same problem on offense, or defense, or both.

On offense, the receivers don't get separation.
On defense, the opposing receivers are allowed a lot of separation.

That's not to say our receivers are never open, or that a ball can't possibly be completed to them, but you just don't see people wide open on a regular basis. I don't watch very much football other than Packers games, but when I do I regularly see receivers running wide open. I don't know if this is normal, or what you should expect our receivers to be able to do, it is an observation.

I don't think that Rodgers is playing as well as we have come to expect either. On the other hand, if you gave him the clean pocket and receivers that were as open as Denver's last night, I think he would have lit it up.

As for the defense, when you see guys making grade school difficulty catches all game long because nobody is near them to contest it, you have to make a change. Is it the coverage, or is it the fact that the pass rush just wasn't getting home?

So at the end of the day, last night sucked. It's hard to have a positive outlook on the rest of the season, but there is still a long way to go and it will be interesting to see what changes going forward. That's the only thing I can do anyways, so no sense making a fool out of myself blaming people and getting into fights with other posters.

Anyone think McCarthy should consider taking back play calling duties?

This might be a panic move, but our offense has only looked good in 1 out 7 games this season (KC).

If Aaron Rodgers is going to balk on a wide open RCobb in the middle of the field, it doesn't matter what's called.

This appears to be a confidence/trust/execution issue with the passing game now, not necessarily what's called.

The problem is, this team just didn't show up today. Normally they only go into a "lull" for TWO quarters of the game.

Your second point is also what I was alluding to with Rodgers. He doesn't trust anyone aside from maybe Cobb right now. We've seen him throw "50-50 balls" to JJ, RR, and Davante even this year, but had zero interest in attempting that last night. Whether he's too timid, or he has valid reason (Davante still not 100%? RR has droppsies in practice??) is where the question lies but clearly he's not willing to trust the WRs to make plays, even when covered, like he has in the past.

I agree. In a magical world of make believe that we don't live in, it would be nice to sub in any other NFL QB into the game last night and compare how they fared against how Rodgers did. Again, I don't think Rodgers played well last night, but I don't think his play was the root of the problem.

I didn't notice that, but you might be right. What I did notice was that the pass rush was in his head almost from the beginning. He spent more time looking at where the D linemen were and how to dance around to try to avoid them, than focusing downfield on his receivers and where to throw. The end result was that often he would run out of time as the DL closed in, make a snap decision, and throw off balance (and inaccurately).

I like Mike McCarthy I think he is better than many coaches in the league but I think he is a playcaller, not a motivational coach on game day. We would be better with Mike McCarthy calling the plays and somebody else as a coach.

I'm very worried about not being able to defeat ANY good team on the road, but the good thing is that we might still get the #1 seed in the NFC and play at home in the playoffs. There's no team in the NFC we can't defeat at home.
