We are a very different roster than last year. I can't remember a year with Ted with this much turnover from one year to the next. Maybe early on cleaning house?

I think we've seen more aggressiveness over the league as a matter of fact and I think a lot has to do with the new cut down situation.

Dial is a NT, who can play some 5 tech. He and Letroy Guion are the same person.

The problem with Price, Ringo and Lowrey is they are not so good at 0 tech or 0 shade. GB signed Dial to play NT, which means one of 2 things or both:

(1) They want Dial to take snaps at NT in base, so Clark can have more snaps in the 2-4-5; and/or

(2) They're gonna play alot more base D and need a real back-up NT.

GB kept only 3 ILBs; presumably because they're planning on alot of those snaps going to Jones and Burnett playing some ILB. But, in the 2-4-5 with Burnett and/or Jones playing the 2 ILB spots, they were being run over. So maybe they plan to play alot more base than years past, only with 1 or 2 safeties playing the ILB position.

On Odom, they may be getting a little intel and playing a New Orleans game. They sign a guy introduce him to the organization; cut him a few weeks later when they dont have several healthy inactives and need the roster spot and hope he decides to stay on their PS. Surely if cut in 3-4 weeks he stay w/ GB.

Note: when Hill is cut, he will be back just like Callahan did last year.

Even when the Niners suck their defense is better than ours, so I don't see what the complaining is about.

More base.

I read today that the Packers front 7 was so worn down from the game in Dallas that they had nothing left for Atlanta. SOFT. Needed toughness FOREVER on this defense. Although, these aren't franchise players by any means, I really do like the move to get tougher. Josh Jones is a maniac, Brice is a killer, Odom and Dial and Brooks are 3 tough amigos. That's a huge change from where we've been. Talent minus toughness is a waste on defense. See: Fackrell...

Perhaps, Marty B. is rubbing off here. He's the guy who said they had too many "bitches" on the roster in Chicago to win and that coaches loved the bitches. He said he didn't want a LB who cared about how his shoes looked. Perhaps, that type of mindset is filtering to the D because they're afraid Bennett will go psychotic if he has to play on a team of little B's on D. :)

EDIT: blueleopard...the complaint is a concern. We added 2 former Niners to help with the run defense. The Niners had the NFL's worst run D last season and it wasn't even close. They were B A D. Averaged over 165 ypg... D gave up a league worst 480 points. If not for the Browns, they'd have given up 100 more points than the next worst defense.

For some reason, our org is attracted to things in SF when they're at their lowest. Mike McCarthy was hired after he coordinated the NFL's 32nd ranked offense. Just a curious truth.

As for back-up NTs there is also Jean Francois, who is another good run stuffer. Both Jean Francois and Dial have played at every interior DL position from 0 to 5 tech. So I don't think this is solely based on back-up NT alone, but they can also both offer some stuff in nickel as well.

Anyways one Falcon's fan got worried the Packers would get info from Odom, and the Falcon fans general responses were summed up as: What info? That our defense plays like savage dogs! Our defense is extremely simple, and Odom has never played on offense. So he probably has no big secrets to share with them.

And I agree, if the Packers don't understand the simplified Seahawks/Falcons defensive by now... then they're in trouble. Rodgers probably knows more about the defense than Odom does.

I believe Brooks and Odom signings were more about getting some physical OLBers that can play the elephant role as the Packers only had Perry and Gilbert (and Gilbert wasn't good enough to keep on the 53).... and their signing gives them more options to more Perry and Matthews around (and hopefully depth).

I think Ringo is pretty good. Hopefully he can stick around on the practice squad. He could easily be needed once one injury happens. He has some pass rush ability. Decent depth.

The Packers cut defensive tackle Christian Ringo to make room for Dial, swapping a player with better pass-rush ability for one with better run-stopping ability. Since cutting the troubled Guion on Aug. 8, the Packers never really found someone capable of backing up starter Kenny Clark at nose tackle.

Last year, Guion played 448 regular-season plays, which accounted for 43.5 percent of the defensive snaps. Clark played 333 or 32 percent. This year, Clark is expected to play at least the number of snaps Guion did at nose tackle and maybe a few as a third-down inside rusher if he shows pass-rush improvement.

Dial mostly played end in the 49ers’ 3-4 defense, but he did play some nose tackle and the Packers think he has the ability to play nose or three-technique in their nickel defense. He was filling in at the nose position with the 49ers this summer before being released.

Before adding Dial, the Packers were planning on using a combination of Jean Francois, Mike Daniels and Dean Lowry to back up Clark, but Dial gives them a better option. The Packers’ run defense would have been in big trouble if Clark had gotten hurt, given none of the other three are versed in playing over the center.

This article pretty much agree with what Barfarn said above... but I'm confused as hell by this... why are they building up Dial limited experiences at NT and completely dismissing Jean Francois experiences at NT?

I can't find video of Dial playing the zero tech NT position, more video has him at 3-4 DE like the article said... and when the 49ers went to the 4-3, they moved Dial to NT and he failed to make the roster. Combined that with, I've easily (and semi accidentally) found video of Ricky Jean Francois playing NT for the 49ers from years ago and
the 49ers listed him as a NT

Jean Francois is #95; back-up NT for the dominant 49ers defenses, can be seen at 0:25 and 1:50

In recent years Jean Francois has been mainly playing DT/DE but he has played back-up NT full time while with the 49ers, which to my (very limited) knowledge Dial has never done. To say Francois isn't versed in it and dismissing him in comparisons to Dial seems a tad insulting to me.

That being said, I'm sure we'll see Dial lined up in the middle some, because Capers likes those long arms blocking passing lanes up the middle, just like we saw Peppers there... and Dial is probably better against the run. But Jean Francois and Dial are both very versatile in where they can line up across the DL.

The Packers had the option of filling the backup nose tackle position with Brian Price, but when Dial was released they saw a better, more experienced option. The Packers kept Ringo over Price in the cut to 53, but probably will now try to get Ringo onto the practice squad.

packersnews.com  wrote:

IMO this part is BS. Even IF Dial was released well before they made their releases and IF Price was the #2 NT (which I question both), then part implies they were gambling, that they didn't care about losing their back-up NT, because they KNEW Dial would be signing with them over any of the other 30 NFL teams.

Doesn't it make much more sense, that Price was the 3rd NT, and they kept Ringo because he played better than Price... releasing Price, and then saw Dial was released and liked him more than Ringo? Because now both Francois and Dial can back-up the entire interior DL from 0 tech to 5 tech and takes pressure off a recovering rookie Montravius Adams to learn multiple positions and let him focus on his strength (pass rush up the middle, especially from the 3 tech)
