Apparently he told reporters that he could tell they were smiling, despite wearing masks because their eyes looked “chinky”.

Come on man, you know better than that, especially in today’s world.

I heard it. Didn't think it merited the outlash I saw on tweeter, but it's also something I wouldn't say. He apologized shortly after. Hopefully that's the end of it. Definitely gotta be wiser even when speaking in jest. Probably better to not even try joking at all if you can't do so without that kind of comment.

Don't kill the messenger here... But I honestly didn't know that was a racial word for the longest time.. probably because it's not in my vocabulary and I didn't hear it that often, but I did hear it from time to time, usually from old folks.

Of course that's been true in my life for other words too...

I had a black roommate do a weird move (which did look very much like someone doing charades of a monkey), and his white friend stated that out loud and my roommate got semi-offended. Up to that point, I honestly didn't realize monkey was used as a racial slur. I just hadn't heard it used in that context.

My point being, I honestly haven't known what is or isn't a racial slur until some situation brings it up.

Don't get me wrong, he should of run into that one by now and certainly known better.

But to a certain degree, it's almost becoming a job in itself just to keep up with all the different things people will take offense too. And different people react different ways...

One situation I've always found interesting, if musicians put racial slurs music, then can fans of all races sing those lyrics? Or do other races have to skip that lyric? I've seen it both ways... I just avoid it to stay clear of that potential situation.

But I did find it funny when a black rapper brought white fan on stage with him to sing his song, and when the white person sang the racial lyric correctly, the rapper got upset. In which I think the rapper is wrong...as your fans are going to sing your lyrics... if there is certain words you don't want them to say, then don't have them as lyrics.

But this has always been a tough subject that is always treated differently in different situations, and I think that's tough on us as people to choose which direction... and I assume Funchess just couldn't quickly think of another easy way to describe it, how he could see people where smiling in their eyes, and explained it in a poor way.

I had no clue Redskin was bad. If it wasn't for the outlash, I'd have been blissfully ignorant.

Sounded like he thought most Native Americans realized the context was different... and they didn't really care or get upset about Washington team name... they did thing it should be changed in the future. Because of how it was mostly being used around them.

Funchess did not mean to say something that was a racial slur. And he apologized. So that SHOULD be the end of it.
He goofed, and didn’t mean anything bad. An unfortunate use of words.
And you made so many great points! Rappers constantly use racial slurs, and say how you should just “bust a cap” into someone that dares to “diss” you. And to kill cops. Yet these people can spew that garbage, and no one gets offended? Huh??? Can we say “hypocrite”?
I think people need to get thicker skin and not let any little thing said “offend” them.
I got called “a dumb pollock” more then once. And you know what? I didn’t let it get to me.
In fact I usually turned it around, used it to make fun of myself, and the people laughed with me and stopped saying it.
Of course that’s just me. I don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is too short to let that kind of stuff rule you.
JMO of course.

This just in: a bunch of white guys from Wisconsin didn't realize racial slurs are offensive to non-white people. Having recently learned that racial slurs are in fact offensive, said white people are in turn offended that people take offense to racial slurs. These words weren't offensive to them or their exclusively white friends when they grew up in the (insert decade prior to 80's) so they don't understand why anyone would be offended by them now.

I swear to god, sometimes this forum is like an Onion article.

You are one of the constantly offended politically correct judges.
Did anyone here say racially inconsiderate statements are okay? Nope. Just that Funchess realized what he said was wrong and apologized for it. What’s wrong with that?
I swear, you just live to correct people, and think you are soooo much better then everyone.
Be careful....that pedestal you put yourself on has a big fall.
If you are going to judge, be specific on who said anything so bad that you, the “high and mighty” feel we’re so horrible.
Or do you just like to be the judge, jury and executioner?

Mucky Tundra (18h) : @ByRyanWood Without Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom, #Packers starting OL: Rasheed Walker, Jordan Morgan, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, Andre Dillard.
Martha Careful (23h) : I have never seen an OTA, but who is lining up at LT and RG with starters? or is it all individual drills?
Zero2Cool (30-May) : Bears are the first team to be selected for Hard Knocks
dfosterf (29-May) : Andy Herman and his Pack a day podcast put up GB strengths yesterday. This morning he did weaknesses. They are both very good.
Zero2Cool (25-May) : Yes.
beast (24-May) : Does he say what it is?
Zero2Cool (22-May) : Christian Watson believes he has discovered the root cause his soft-tissue leg injuries
Zero2Cool (22-May) : Savage played last half of season with tear in rotator cuff
Zero2Cool (22-May) : SISSIES!!!!
Mucky Tundra (22-May) : Sounds like both Kraft and Tom were injuried before OTAs began
buckeyepackfan (22-May) : Not serious but waiting for strength and conditioning coach referwnces.
buckeyepackfan (22-May) : Tom and Kraft both injured(pectoral muscle),
Zero2Cool (20-May) : I feel similar about person and product/service.

Martha Careful (17-May) : I bet some of us have had 6+ mRNA jabs, a UKR flag on our walls, and still think Fauci has a thread of integrity
Zero2Cool (16-May) : From what I've read, it's all Jets , not us.
CanPackFan (16-May) : Will there ever be a time when Rodgers' whacko views will not reflect on GB? He is the past, thank god.
Zero2Cool (16-May) : Jan 4th gonna be rough with that start time lol
Zero2Cool (16-May) : Packers schedule listed. Boom.
buckeyepackfan (15-May) : Let the leaks begin. Colts @ Packers week 2, Vikings @ Packers week 4
Zero2Cool (14-May) : WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling to Bills
Zero2Cool (14-May) : Jets and Aaron Rodgers open up on Monday Night Football,
Zero2Cool (13-May) : $170 guaranteed. This might impact Jordan Love
Zero2Cool (13-May) : Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million extension
Zero2Cool (13-May) : I know we moved on. That tidbit just makes me a touch happier.
Zero2Cool (13-May) : Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line
Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
