They also make the assumption that everything would just shake out the same way with names swapped around like Huber does here: assuming that GB ends up in the NFC title game but better positioned on defense due to more cap to spread around. He also assumes Watt would have fared better vs Tampa but that's overlooking Brady's quick release and the number of balls that he throws away when nothing is available to avoid contact at all costs. If GB drafts Watt, who's playing opposite of him? Does Gutey still sign Z to a massive contract? Does Preston get signed as a cheaper fill in option? Do they draft some mid-tier guys in later rounds instead of Gary? A large part of the success that GB has had in terms of creating pressure and getting to the QB has revolved around rotating the Smith Bros and Gary as well as lining them up all over.
The reason so many are sore about that pick - many (most) fans I know wanted them to draft TJ. It adds to the anger because the returns on King have been that of a 7th round flyer pick. Easy to criticize with hindsight, but even without that - it was obvious in the moment that they took the wrong guy.
All of that said - it is true that things would have been handled differently as far as free agency and future drafts. No telling what roster we might have now. Instead of having a guy like Z or Gary, he might be expected to do it all himself - happens more often than most would think.
