In the end it sounds like overall he didn't quite have the hangtime which is important. They really want the hangtime to be long enough for the defenders to cover the distance the punt covers. Don't want to give the return man time to look for holes before he has to react. That combined with the relationship Masthay has with Crosby.

No sense getting your knickers in a twist, it was a local kid makes good kind of a story. There is nothing wrong with people rooting for an underdog. Other than his mom, dad and the guy down the street there are not many people who would want him on the team if he didn't outperform a player who has consistently under performed. Sometimes in very critical situations. Mathsay probably leads the league in shanked balls the past 2 years.
