I told my daughter that I'll be buying a compact car (e.g. Saturn etc) and we'll be driving to Wisconsin any other time, instead of flying.

A 56-year-old former rape victim refused to let airport security officials feel up her breasts so she was thrown to the floor, put in handcuffs, and arrested.

What's in a number?

Last sentence in the linked story: "The TSA says less than three percent of travelers get a pat-down." Sounds okay, right?

Until you realize how many people travel. 3% of a big number is a big number. And that big number represents a lower bound on the number of people whose rights are violated.

Daily.

I'm seriously considering not flying anymore. I'm not all that frequent a flyer, but I'm in a profession where I"m expected to attend several conferences a year, some of which invariably occur during the school year. But "is it close enough that I can drive or take the train?" is now a primary determinant whether I consider attending.

This is a perfect example how the TSA is causing airlines to lose business. I'd love to see a class action lawsuit against the TSA by the airline companies. Actually, in a perfect world, I'd cut off funding to the TSA. If you want to stop an organization from becoming Orwellian, cut off its funding.

Saturns are damn good cars. There was a long streak in Texas where I was getting over 40 miles per gallon in my Saturn. I forgot if I took I-40 or I-10. I've driven them both.

Ask someone who trusts government why it is that governments have been responsible for the deaths of more people in the 20th and 21st centuries than have died previously in the entirety of human history and watch them squirm.

Judging by all the comments on that Playmobil toy in Rockmolder's link, I would suggest you all run out and buy that toy. Something tells me it will likely be pulled from the shelf soon. Then you will be left with a nice investment.

I don't think Playmobil's making the toy anymore. At least, it's listed as "out of stock."

25 million soldiers killed in WWI & WWII combined.

Lenin (European communist) killed 4 million people.

Stalin (European communist) killed between 19 million and 27 million people. His purges were responsible for a lot of the deaths but also he ordered starvation of Ukrainians which resulted in millions of death and a lot of cases of cannibalism.

Mao (Asian communist) - anywhere from 30 million to 55 million killed. During the Cultural Revolution, enemies of the state were often killed and eaten. Yes, look it up.

Hitler (European fascist) killed 12 million.

Ottoman Empire (Europe & Asia) killed between 1 and 2 million Armenians.

I can go on and on but I'm getting sick of typing so I'll omit Bosnia, Ethiopia, the Philippines, etc. Morale of the story, war sucks, but governments kill more people than even war.
