NEW YORK - A Wal-Mart worker has died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers shortly after the Long Island store opened Friday, police said. Unconfirmed reports said a pregnant woman also miscarried as the crowd rushed in.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old Wal-Mart worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. ET, an hour after the store opened.

A police statement said a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking him to the ground." The exact cause of death "will be determined by the medical examiner's office," the police stated.

A coworker said the clerk was "bum-rushed by 200 people," according to the New York Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges," said Jimmy Overby. "He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Police added that "a 28-year-old pregnant female was also transported to an area hospital for observation."

Shopper Jessica Keyes told the Daily News that she saw the woman being knocked down near where the worker lay dying.

According to Keys, when paramedics arrived they told the woman that "there's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."

Other shoppers said people kept entering the story as emergency crews attended the woman and store clerk.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead," the Daily News quoted shopper Halcyon Alexander as saying. "People were still coming through."

"They're savages," shopper Kimberly Cribbs said of the crowd. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Police added that three other shoppers " suffered minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals."

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede during the day-after-Thanksgiving bargain hunting, but said a "medical emergency" caused them to close the store.

Another reason to burn 'Black Friday' off the calender.

Wal-Mart is the WORST place to be on Black Friday. And those that go shopper there on that day.. I'm not even going to go there. 😶

So when I go out in the dining room (after Thanksgiving dinner--Cowboys game for reference) of my sister-in-laws home, what do you reckon' all the women are cackling about? Debating on which Wal-Mart to assault at oh dark hundred. My wife had to work, plus fortunately she hates Wal-Mart almost as much as I do anyway, so a non-participant.

My bet it was the HDTV coupon that did that employee in. Everyone in that room was figuring out the logistics of newspapers/coupons, etc. to get their greasy little hands on a $150.00 off coupon.

I'll also bet the poor man was rolled over by a bunch of women. Sorry for the totally sexist attitude that remark reflects, but I swear those ladies in that dining room looked and sounded fully capable of running with the wolves in the dog-eat-dog environment of a Black Friday opening of our local Wal-Mart hell hole...

Wow, this is bad. Black Friday is a big shopping day when you get everything cheaper or something, I asume?

The 'funny' thing is, they all regret doing this, they're all blaming it on other people and I bet they're all saying 'this shouldn't happen again'... Yet, when they can get a cheap PC next year, they're all back.

Greediness is just taking on idiotic forms, it seems.

Yeah, this is insane. Valley Stream is about 20 minutes away from me. It's unbelievable how crazy people get to save a few bucks. It really is.

There isn't much you can do in a surging crowd.

The worst place to go on Black Friday is Circuit City. Their register system is networked between all stores so the system gets overloaded when every register is trying to make a transaction. I stood in line for over an hour and there were less than 10 people in front of me.

Mucky Tundra (3-Apr) : Diggs, Collins, Dell and Schultz is gonna be tough to cover
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : Stefon Diggs' trade will not be processed as a post-June 1 designation, so that is just over $31 million in dead cap this year.
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : Bills trading WR Stefon Diggs to the Texans in exchange for a 2025 2nd-round pick. (via @rapsheet)
