I got tired of the announcers harping on angry coaches, because we all know the coaches never got mad at the regular officials. [sarcasm]

The lack of consistency is troubling. I don't mind late calls. The game's moving very fast, so they need time to react, but we need consistency. They weren't consistent in the Green Bay game. A couple of lucky plays and you could argue San Francisco was cheated out of a major road win had Green Bay came back.

I had Sirius Radio on in the car. I listened to parts of both teams radio networks. Both were screaming at the poor calls and lack of consistency.

I was strongly in the "These guys aren't that much worse than the regular officials and will get better with time." camp in the preseason.

I don't say this much, but I was wrong. Very, very wrong. This crew was absolutely pitiful, and the only positive thing I can say about them is that they were screwing both teams evenly.

The Packers crew called more penalties than any other crew during the preseason.

Worst refs ever. The block in the back call was atrocious.

They waived off a block in the back which never was and missed a blatant block in the back.

Both teams suffered.

The NFL needs full time officials. Properly trained and coached. They should know the rules book inside out. They should be watching film and studying year around. At $90K+, they should have a waiting line of competent people.

The issue is and will be, there simply isn't enough work to make that many employees full time with such a light workload over the course of 12 months.

What needs to happen IMO, is they need a deeper pool of refs to be able to pull in and make them more incentive based in compensation. Make an acceptable range of mistakes before you start getting docked pay and or sit for games without pay.

Also give them help in terms of a league office in which they can turn to within games for replays and questionable calls to turn to. They are human, and if we want them to be almost perfect, then we have to give them more than just there "human" eyes.

The replacement refs make a greater percentage of errors.. one cannot argue that, but the normal crews make a number of errors weekly as well.

It is human.

Well....if the "real" refs needed any incentive as far as the NFL begging them to come back, yesterday should give them all the ammo they need.
I have NEVER seen a worse reffed game.
False starts by the niners not called, pass interference not called, the block in the back not called.
And the opening kickoff.....has anyone ever heard of an illegal block in the back by the kicking team?
It was AWFUL.
I know that even the real refs miss calls, but this was constant all day. I couldn't even count all of them.

Read on PFT today that:

1. Jerry Markbreit opined (again) on how "Goodell doesn't care," etc.

but also

2. Ben Dreith thought the replacements were doing a good job.

Both were excellent officials, pretty much better than any of the replacements or any of today's locked-out officials. So if these two guys can't agree, I just can't get bothered by the lockout/replacements.

To be sure I'll complain if I see a game where they suck. But in a normal year, you can expect the Packer to get a couple more games with the Triplett and Hochuli crews, including some in the playoffs because of their seniority if nothing else. And it's pretty much guaranteed, therefore, that the Packers would have some games where the officiating sucked.

If all of these wonderful experienced NFL officials were as good as Markbreit and Dreith I'd be depressed about the loss.

But they weren't. So I'm not.
