This year's class of restricted free agents includes Packers cornerback Sam Shields. Undrafted in 2010, Shields has become a key contributor for the Packers in three seasons, drawing a second-round tender. Shields and the Packers are talking, we're told, about a long-term deal. For now, nothing is imminent — and definitely not as imminent as

It is about time to get this wrapped up so they can focus on other positions in the draft. I would hate for Uncle Teddy to feel the need to grab another CB and then sign Shields and have a glut of players at CB.

We already have a glut at corner. Shields gets signed long term and next year Williams gets cut, unless he reverts back to pre-injury form. I believe he has close to a $9M cap number in 2014.
