While it might be a little early to put Derek Sherrod amongst the Packers' all-time worst first round draft choices, he is slowly sliding into the discussion. I haven't given up on the guy. I'm still holding out the idea of him anchoring LT for the rest of Rodgers career. [-o<

ummmm if you're hoping he's LT for the rest of Rodgers career,
then what are you hoping happens to Bulaga? who's currently at LT.

My head tells me expect IR or a release. I guess we will have to see where the rest of the guys are at health-wise on the line once the cut downs begin.
Logic behind this statement: We train these guys often to swing as needed and seem to draft and pick guys up who can be flexible. Newhouse has proven to be reliable and they continue to talk up Barclay as a legitimate starter based on his performance last year when Bulaga was out.
My idea, and I share this with Wes from Packersnews (who is awesome btw), is that Gus Van Roten, Barclay, and Bakhtiari will serve to backup our "current" starting lineup.

Someone who suffers a catastrophic injury as a rookie is not a bust. Period. Even if the slow rehab results in his getting cut, it's the injury, not the player or when he was picked.
That said, I understand how difficult it would be for him to come back from this and I hope that he's ready to go and can make the team. If not I hope it's just a few more weeks...PUP to start the season...and then they can keep him. If he can return to health I think he's still a better prospect than Barclay and ultimately he has a better upside than most of the line, but only time will tell.

Barclay belongs inside.
Baktiari sounds like he's impressing. We could end up with some depth on the Oline.

I wouldn't be surprised if Baktiari wins the starting job at RT.

I have to agree. Sherrod is not a bust. It was a horrific injury. Harrell too had injury issues but he had issues when he was drafted so that makes his failure a little bit different.
I expect Sherrod to begin the year on the PUP. There is no way for him to get enough reps to be a contributing member of the team between now and the start of the season. After PUP is over I have no idea.I would hate to see him stuck on the IR for another year. He seems to have made some progress. It just takes time.

IF Sherrod can come back and be a good LT it could sure change the complexion of the OL. All of a sudden we could have some talented depth.

How dare Ted Thompson not foresee that extremely ugly injury. To lump Sherrod with Mandarich is just silly or any of the legitimate drafts busts is silly. Bad injuries happen in this sport. Are we gonna blame management for Nick Collins career-ending injury as well?

Not only that, but we have sufficient depth to the point where we don't NEED him to be ready.
Take your time dude. Get yourself right.

When I think about Sherrod, I think of Mike Flanagan:
http://www.google.com/ur...mp;bvm=bv.50165853,d.eWUHope Sherrod has that kind of resolve. A high percentage of people wouldn't have what it takes to make it all the way back. Maybe we should cut the kid some slack before whipping out names like Mandarich and Harrell.

I was thinking of Flanagan too.

no doubt bro. I was too lazy to mention him. I certainly didn't want to look up his story. (I think you did it last time we talked about how long Sherrod's rehab has been. Which is why I was thinking about Flanny.)

I agree with those who say Sherrod shouldn't be considered a "bust".
He is a victim of a very serious injury.
To lump him in with Mandarich is plain silly.
