Rob Demovsky said: GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Clay Matthews may never be free of hamstring issues, but at least now the Green Bay Packers linebacker has gotten smarter about dealing with them.
Matthews said on Thursday, when he was a full participant in practice for the first time since his latest hamstring injury, that he took himself out of the Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals when he felt something was wrong in the second quarter.
"I just told them where I was at and how I felt and moving forward what the smart thing would be," said Matthews, who was injured in the second quarter when he forced his second fumble of the game.
why couldn't he be "smarter about hamstring issues" 2 years ago?

Hamstring injuries suck and never go away. Its unfortunate because I can see the same fate meeting Burnett and Hayward in future seasons. The good thing is that I don't think there has been a season where Clay has been out more than once in the past and we were lucky to have it fall on the early bye week this season.

Why aren't the Packers as an organization smarter about hamstring issues?
If an individual player can be smarter, it would seem to follow that the whole organization could be smarter.

What do they mean "smarter" anyway? Taking himself out at first twinge before it got worse?
I've had a hamstring pull and several strains over the last 25 or so years, and that's not really the way it works. The original event - the twinge or worse - is the peak of the curve if you were to graph the injury. It takes disgustingly long to go away, and if it's bad enough, it inhibits performance all while it is healing, but (and I was told this by a doctor), it isn't likely to get worse from use - if you can stand to use it. So if by "smart", Clay meant he knew he was going to be less effective than his replacement, then yeah, he was smart to take himself out. But if by "smart" he thought he was preventing a worse hamstring injury by coming out at first twinge, nope. that's basically incorrect.
