GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Clay Matthews may never be free of hamstring issues, but at least now the Green Bay Packers linebacker has gotten smarter about dealing with them.

Matthews said on Thursday, when he was a full participant in practice for the first time since his latest hamstring injury, that he took himself out of the Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals when he felt something was wrong in the second quarter.

"I just told them where I was at and how I felt and moving forward what the smart thing would be," said Matthews, who was injured in the second quarter when he forced his second fumble of the game.

why couldn't he be "smarter about hamstring issues" 2 years ago?

He's two years older and wiser.

Hamstring injuries suck and never go away. Its unfortunate because I can see the same fate meeting Burnett and Hayward in future seasons. The good thing is that I don't think there has been a season where Clay has been out more than once in the past and we were lucky to have it fall on the early bye week this season.

Why aren't the Packers as an organization smarter about hamstring issues?
If an individual player can be smarter, it would seem to follow that the whole organization could be smarter.

What do they mean "smarter" anyway? Taking himself out at first twinge before it got worse?

I've had a hamstring pull and several strains over the last 25 or so years, and that's not really the way it works. The original event - the twinge or worse - is the peak of the curve if you were to graph the injury. It takes disgustingly long to go away, and if it's bad enough, it inhibits performance all while it is healing, but (and I was told this by a doctor), it isn't likely to get worse from use - if you can stand to use it. So if by "smart", Clay meant he knew he was going to be less effective than his replacement, then yeah, he was smart to take himself out. But if by "smart" he thought he was preventing a worse hamstring injury by coming out at first twinge, nope. that's basically incorrect.

His tampon started to chafe so he took himself out.

beast (8m) : Yeah the Packers defense got wore out... being on the field so long. Giving longer breathers than 3&out would of helped a lot IMO.
Cheesey (55m) : There wouldn't have been so many 3 and outs, thus keeping our D off the field.
Cheesey (56m) : True, but with the low score we would have had a chance with Rodgers behind center.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Brees is a damn good QB, not giving Capers a pass, not even close.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Saints kicked Packers ass with Rodgers too.
Cheesey (1h) : That's just it. Rodgers needs a DEFENSE as well. And without him, there is NO chance.
beast (2h) : Just fire everyone! Rodgers can do it without them! Hell trade for the healthy Browns players!
Cheesey (4h) : Capers needs to GO. So do players that can't cut it.
Zero2Cool (5h) : Capers presser summed up? INjuries are why we suck. (shut up, coach and adapt)
Zero2Cool (5h) : nearly crapped myself hearing dom capers talk, forgot to close the tab after mccarthy haha
Zero2Cool (5h) : McCarthy said the communication was not good enough on defense yesterday. Injuries in secondary have complicated substitution patterns.
Zero2Cool (5h) : McCarthy again says "I believe in him"... sorry, BS, we saw how you believe in him yesterday.
Zero2Cool (5h) : @The_Green_Gold Highest graded players Kenny Clark & Blake Martinez. It wouldn't be possible to grade an entire defense
Porforis (6h) : Well, it WAS clean until someone 'shouted' in it...
Zero2Cool (6h) : QB Brett Hundley when targeting a WR against Saints: 6-for-15, 54 yards.
Zero2Cool (6h) : clean?
