GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers sounds conflicted about when he might return from his broken collarbone.

On one hand, the Green Bay Packers quarterback doesn't want to do any further damage that could not only end his season but mean an offseason full of rehabilitation work. On the other hand, he knows his team is now 5-5, having lost three straight since he went down against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 4, and he sees the Packers' playoff chances slipping away.

As a result, Rodgers refused to rule himself out of Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings during an appearance on the TV show Packers Live with Larry McCarren on Monday night. The show airs on WGBA-TV (Channel 26) in Green Bay and WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) in Milwaukee.

"I'm going to be back when I'm ready, when there's a very low risk of re-injuring (the collarbone)," Rodgers told McCarren. "Obviously, if you have another blow like I had, a displacement of the collarbone could be three to five months of rehab. That's not what we want.

"At the same time, we're 5-5. We might need a little jolt here at some point."

The Packers post the show to their team website each week, but Monday night's episode had not yet been put up at the time of this writing. The page for the show can be found here.

A few hours before the taping of the show, Packers coach Mike McCarthy named Scott Tolzien the starter for Sunday. But the coach also said he had not discussed Rodgers with the medical staff.

"Really, I don't make medical decisions," McCarthy said. "That will be no different with Aaron Rodgers. We all know he wants to play; he wants to play as soon as he can. But those are big decisions when you put a player back on the field. When everybody's confident, then that's when it will happen."

Rodgers acknowledged to McCarren that he is anxious to play and struggling with being a spectator.

"We're still two weeks out of the injury against Chicago. It's a significant injury. I'm doing whatever I can to get back out on the field. Obviously, it's slow going," Rodgers said. "It's unlike any other injury I've had. I've had knee issues, a shoulder injury. I broke finger in college on my throwing hand. But those were all injuries I could play through.

"This has just been a waiting game — and that's probably been the hardest part, as they say. I'm just taking it one day at a time and looking forward to getting back out there at some point."

Asked if there's a game he's targeting, Rodgers replied with the same answer he gave last Tuesday on his weekly radio show on 540 ESPN and ESPNWisconsin.com.

"I don't want to get any hopes up, but it is Monday and I never like to rule myself out of any game," he said. "That being said... Mike may have already done that earlier."

Actually, McCarthy didn't officially rule Rodgers out when he named Tolzien the starter; in fact, Rodgers hasn't been ruled out until the Friday injury report each of the past two weeks.

You have to do a cost benefit analysis.

On the one hand, it could be reinjured. On the other hand, you have to take that risk or (apparently) the season will be lost.

If Aaron breaks the collar bone again, he will be lost for the season. But if he doesn't come back, we (apparently) will have lost the season anyway.

As long as the injury will heal by the start of next TC, they might have to trot him out there. Of course it would have to be healed to near 100%. It can't be so weak that it's gonna snap on any regular sack. He has to be able to take hits. But they're going to have to err on the side of risk.

Assuming that is, that "we can't win without him." And as long as Mike is taking that attitude, he's creating that reality. We're not gonna win running Lacy into a 9 man front. Or telegraphing 1 yard passes. That's Polish football.

If he doesn't play Sunday do we assume that he wont play thanksgiving? Seeing that it is a few days that separate the games?

I see your point but I don't necessarily think so. We could also assume that he is that close to playing this week so Thanksgiving week is a go.

Honestly I wouldn't expect to see him this week and even though its only 4 more days until the next game it wouldn't surprise me to see him play against the Lions.

I think if he would be ready to go in two Sundays (if the Packers didn't play on Thanksgiving) he will be ready on Thanksgiving.

Keep two things in mind:
1: This staff constantly lies to us about the severity of injuries.

2: The Lions are known cheap shot artists.

When have they lied? Seriously, I don't get this claim of yours man lol. Saying someone LIED is quite bold. Do they keep or withhold information, sure, EVERY team does! You make it sound like the Packers are aiming to betray the fans or something. Lay off man, lay off.

Sure it would be great if the fans got to know everything behind closed doors, but teams don't have to share something if they don't want to. People have to realize this.

One way that I look at it is that there only a limited number of years with Aaron at the helm and to the call this year a bust only reduces the number possible to get at least one more trophy.

Then again, maybe it is better to just throw in the towel and let Aaron heal. This year has been unbelievable with all the injuries. I get so pissed thinking about it.

Come on, it's the Vikings.

If the backup can't beat the VIkings, if the Packers can't win a game with a backup QB even against the Vikings, do they really count as a a playoff team?

Like Wade said, I think the Packers will be just fine against the Vikings with Tolzien at QB. People claim our season is over, but the Packers are still only one game behind the Bears and Lions and they still have to play each team one more time.

Hopefully we can get Rodgers back for the Lions game.

That'd pretty much what I've been saying without coming right out and saying it (not wanting to sound arrogant or anything)

I think the vikings are one of the worst teams in the league. Right now I think I might only put the Jaguars behind them. Having said that, it is a divisional game and that always means something. I'm not saying this is a gimme game by any means but like you said, if we can't beat the vikings can we expect to beat ANYONE else?

I can see Suh purposely trying to drill Rodgers into the turf. And our O-line is banged up and unable to protect anyone.
Unless the Lions and Bears self destruct, I don't see the Packers making the playoffs.
And our D will be destroyed by Calvin Johnson. The guy is a monster.

They didn't lie, but saying Rodgers was "week to week" with a broken collar bone is an insult to our intelligence. Its a 6-8 week injury. Broken bones don't heal in a week or two, or three.

As for him returning, I don't think he should play again until its completely healed. If it takes 8 weeks, so be it.

If it's just a stress fracture he could be back sooner.

If Mike pulls his head out of his ass this week, we could win one with Tolzien against a shitty Queens team. THEN maybe Aaron can rest another week. Hey?
