Sherrod is better than any LT currently on the roster.

GREEN BAY — While there isn't an opening for him in the starting lineup on the Green Bay Packers' offensive line, Derek Sherrod is at least healthy enough to work with the No. 2 line and have hope for contributing in some way this season.

And he's at least giving himself a chance because, for the first time in his NFL career, he's getting a full offseason program of work.

Sherrod played only six snaps on offense last season after being activated from the physically unable to perform list in November, and while that certainly wasn't much, it was a milestone for him. The 2011 first-round pick suffered a career-threatening leg injury on Dec. 18, 2011 at Kansas City that not only required emergency surgery, but sidelined him for nearly two full seasons.

"That's a tough situation, obviously, being out for almost two years. I feel it when I have a long weekend, so I can't imagine being out two years," veteran guard Josh Sitton said after the team's open organized team activity practice earlier this week. "It's tough. But (he looks) 100 times better than he looked last year, so I think we'll see a jump."

Sherrod has been working with the No. 2 offensive line at left tackle, behind starter David Bakhtiari. The Packers aren't in pads during OTAs, so it won't be until training camp and preseason games that the coaches will get a more accurate gauge of where Sherrod is in his comeback.

But for now, they like what they see.

"Derek Sherrod looks really good," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "I'd just say this: This is as strong as I've ever seen him. The time going through the injury, he's definitely done a great job in the strength and conditioning part of it. So it's, really it's the padded work that he needs. He looks more natural, he feels more comfortable on the left side, so he'll continue to compete over there for reps and opportunities."

The Packers decided to decline the fifth-year option on Sherrod's contract, so he'll become a free agent after this season.

Sherrod has yet to speak to reporters during the two open locker-room sessions this offseason.

After playing 115 total snaps as a rookie, Sherrod missed all of the 2012 season because of the injury, opening the season on the PUP list and being activated for practice work on the last possible day. He practiced for three weeks but was never put on the 53-man roster that year.

The team followed a similar timeline last year but at the end of his three-week PUP practice window, Sherrod was activated to the 53.

The difference now is that Sherrod is getting a full offseason workload. In 2011, the lockout wiped out the offseason program after Sherrod was drafted. He didn't do anything but rehab work in the 2012 and 2013 offseasons. This year, he's done the strength-and-conditioning program, individual position workouts and now OTAs. One more week of OTAs remains, with minicamp kicking off June 17.

"He's never had the offseason training," offensive line coach James Campen said. "[So this is] real valuable. Him getting healthy and coming off the PUP and getting some practice (late last season) and he got in five or six plays against Detroit (on Thanksgiving) at the end there, all of those experiences for him are stepping stones.

"Certainly him starting off with the IPWs and then moving forward to here, it's great to see him out there vertical setting and doing all the things that left tackles should be doing. It's great to see him doing that."

That injury was grisly. I was really upset when it happened. He is a great prospect. I wish him the best on a personal level more than anything.

For some reason, I keep thinking "Mike Flanagan."

I would love it if Sherrod beats out either Bahktiari or Bulaga.

Hope he gets back to form. I hate that people consider him a bust. Bad injury and bad luck.

More than anything I am glad to hear Sherrod's injury hasn't necessarily derailed his entire career.

I hope Sherrod is ready to go because with this teams injury history, I half expect him to be anchoring one of the T spots by the end of the year.

Wouldn't shock me in the least if he ended up starting.

When Bakhtiari was drafted some of the draft stuff I read on him said he was best suited to play C. He's already got NFL game experience something Tretter and Linsley don't. However, there's no way they're taking their LT of current and future and moving him to center to accommodate Sherrod.

Mucky Tundra (1h) : End of a Degu-era
dhazer (1h) : Steelers sign Patterson because of new kickoff rule interesting
Zero2Cool (4h) : Former #Packers TE Josiah Deguara is signing a 1-year deal with the Jaguars, per source.
Zero2Cool (5h) : They do not do it for "content sake".
dfosterf (15h) : For the record, I enjoy Beast and Mucky drafts
Zero2Cool (22h) : Haha
Mucky Tundra (23h) : No time for talking! Back to work beast!
beast (27-Mar) : You saw only 4,201 of my mocks? 🥺 I think that means you missed more than half of them 😢
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Does anyone know what Lambeau field improvements got put on hold? My guess would be for the 2025 draft
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : It's like listen, you made 4,201 mocks, no shit.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Cuz during the draft "I had them mocked there!" as if it's amazing.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : They're fun to do once in awhile. It's people who think they are "content" that annoy me.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Against tbd
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Answer to your question is yes, it's a Thursday, will be the Chiefs aga
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Luckily for all concerned, I don't post them. I did one, but that was like 25 mocks ago
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : NFL 2024 gonna start Sept 5th isn't it???
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Ugh... kids these days!
dfosterf (27-Mar) : I'm gonna go do some more mock draft hell instead 🤪
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Did we do one of those prediction threads yet for 2024 season?
dfosterf (27-Mar) : In my city, they are playing the nimby game, in order to keep some railroad tracks vs. 2 professional sports teams and a concert venue.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : And/Or a city council, of which I haven't seen a good one in a very long time
dfosterf (27-Mar) : That sounds like a Mayor, not a city.
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers halt scheduled 80mil upgrade of stadium until lease agreement talks are restarted
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : City of Green Bay puts Packers' Lambeau Field lease talks on hold
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers 1 of 3 teams to vote no on new kickoff rule.

Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Gutekunst said early stages of Jordan Love contract being discussed.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Shouldn't be penalized cuz official screwed up
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Hip drop is not. Super confusing. Referees job is harder
