Freedom of Speech means different things to most people. We say that we may not like what another says, but that we'll defend their right to say it. We are not however totally free to speak anything that one might wish to say. You can't yell FIRE in a theater unless there really is a fire. You can't threaten your neighbor or his /her property . You can't openly protest without a permit. You can't post against the narrow thinking in some sites due to their management. I've not seen that in this site, and don't expect to. Some places have no freedom of speech at all. To speak the wrong thing can get you thrown into a prison.

This thread offers a chance to voice your answer to the question; What does Freedom of Speech mean to you ?

One of my favorites involves freedom in general but it applies to speech as much any anything else.

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

Another one I found interesting:

America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.

To me it means freedom from the abuses of state power. It is a right as against state action.

And its presence in the Constitution to me says that the Founders knew that the greatest threat to the freedom was state power itself. That they knew governments default to equating criticism with treason, and would rather risk allowing sedition rather than restrain speech that criticizes.

I'm old fashioned.

Freedom to be ALIVE is a powerful freedom. Before you can be free to not have that state oppress you; before you can use the freedom to speak out against that oppression - or anything else; Before you can have the freedom to live life the way you see fit to maximize your enjoyment, YOU HAVE TO NOT BE DEAD!

"Those who would give up freedom for security deserve neither"? Nope! I'm here to tell you, Security i.e. Freedom to be Alive IS freedom - the ultimate freedom.
