If you are talking THROWER, how can you not include Lynn Dickey? I know you are certainly old enough to have witnessed him so his exclusion is just foul play sir. [grin1]

The greatest Green Bay Packers player for me has to Don Hutson. He redefined not only the receiver position, but the passing game and doesn't get the credit he deserves.

It took Rice to break many of Hutson's records, and while most would consider Rice the greatest WR of all time, Rice didn't dominate like Hutson did.

Nobody dominated like Hutson though, and its unlikely anyone ever will again. Though, the counter argument to this is that it is more telling of the general quality of play (or lack thereof) at the time Hutson was playing.

He definitely does not get credit for what he did for the game, which was essentially define the modern passing game that exists today.

ooooooh - I HOPE that wasn't intentional hahahahaha.

I agree Hutson is right there with the others I mentioned, but I only went with the ones I actually saw - even I am not old enough for Hutson.

Saw thread title, thought it over and concluded Hutson but then I look through the thread before posting and saw that Zero said Hutson already. šŸ‘Ž

I guess that means he is the best overall player ever. A few years ago I may have been the first to say this. I got waylaid by Smokey talking about the modern QB's and Zero got the honors. Darnit.

I'm just curious, Smokey (or anybody else in here), were you around back then - the Bart Starr era - as a player I mean, or did you mean watch replays of them in the present era?

I was ...... He was GREAT in a lot of ways, and absolutely, that - the Lombardi era - was the greatest period for the Packers as a team in terms of overall domination and star players in comparison to the rest of the league. And of course, it's difficult to compare players from different eras for a lot of reasons. Just the same, I don't think Starr was quite on the level of Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers (projecting a decent number of additional great years for him). Since QB is the most important position, it would have to be between these three for who was the BEST EVER PACKER, but I'd put Hornung right up there too.

You know, "greatest", "best", and "favorite" really could be considered three entirely different things. My favorite was Ray Nitschke - I wonder how much guys like him and Butkis would be able to get away with under today's damn rules.

However the greatest for me boils down to Hutson or Starr.
I have only read about the great Don Hutson, but I was able to see Starr play.
For that reason alone my choice is Bart Starr.

Still, domination like that hasn't happened since and will never happen again.

I guess I'll go with my favourites, as well, then.

In no particular order, I think it'd be Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Willie Davis and Reggie White. They were all amazing pass rushers and amazing people.

The older cousin liked the Colts and had newspaper clippings of them all over the walls of his bedroom. The younger cousin did the same with his favorite team, The Packers . We would lie in a row in front of the TV at my Uncles House with pillows and blankets and watch the Sunday games. It would be a major event when the Colts played the Packers. I became a fan in "63" and enjoyed nothing more than watching the Packers stomp a mudhole in the Cowboys and then walk it dry.

A bunch of players for the Packers have helped define how a position should be played in the NFL and are gold standards. I am biased like anyone, for me the best is Willie Davis. Defined how a position should be played and dominated it his entire career with the Packers. Between the stats as a Packer and what he has done after his NFL career is astounding to me.

Aaron Rodgers.

The man is sick good. Bart Starr never scared me, (as a zealot fan-nervousness wise watching a game) Brett Favre always did, and Aaron Rodgers took Bart Starr Smarts with Brett Favre arm. Don Hutson was awesome for his day, but Aaron Rodgers is on track to break all the records, and he has yet to have an offensive line that he should have been provided in order to reach his full potential.

Put me down for Aaron Rodgers as the best Green Bay Packer ever. I got perspective, no snot-nose. I was a fan before Vince Lombardi by one year... talk about perfect timing for a lad watching the Pack.

Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Hip drop is not. Super confusing. Referees job is harder
