Mike Florio discusses why he believes the Packers will be forced to change their gameplan due to Aaron Rodgers' calf injury.

From the comments:

The pistol is great for the Packers because it takes virtually all of the stress off Rodgers. If he wants to hand the ball off to Eddie Lacy, he doesn’t have to move at all, saving him a minimum of one step on every play. Twenty of the 26 pistol snaps the Packers took against the Lions turned out to be running plays, and they were wildly successful. The Packers produced 107 yards on those 20 runs, an average of 5.4 yards per attempt against one of the best run defenses in recent league history. Their 18 other carries against the Lions produced a total of just 45 yards.

By staying in the pistol, the Packers can leave teams guessing until the last moment, a dangerous move when you consider just how fast Rodgers can deliver the football. We also saw them throwing the Lions off by using packaged plays out of the pistol, something I would be shocked to see them not do more frequently against the Cowboys on Sunday.

Those quick stick routes and decisions at the line of scrimmage all play to Green Bay’s strengths, notably Rodgers’s absurdly quick delivery and ability to fit the ball into impossibly tight windows and Nelson’s ability to create after the catch. They also play to Rodgers’s newfound calf concerns, given that he barely has to move before making his throw. ”

Interesting tidbit about the pistol formation. It really does play to Rodgers strengths while minimizing the amount of movement with the bonus of keeping the opposing D off-balance.

Yeah, that use of the pistol is gonna benefit the Packers long after Rodgers' injury. In addition to what was said, it also allows Lacy or whoever the runner is to slide to a different hole or outside if the original hole isn't blocked very well - as is so often the case with the Packers O Line.

As for the game plan, the only thing Rodgers can't do - or at least shouldn't because of the threat of reinjury - is take off and run. That was seldom or never in the game plan anyway - only sometimes against man coverage and an effective pass rush. The Cowboys have defensed rollouts better this year, and have been weaker against QBs staying in the pocket anyway, so Rodgers mostly staying in the pocket shouldn't hurt.

The way to stop the quick release passes is to play press coverage. If Nelson or Cobb are targeted and are unable to get off the line, I think it will make for a less efficient offense. I am hoping to see alot of Adams, Quarless and Lacy/Starks to counter this to make the cowgirls play soft on defense.

I was pretty calm during the week but with two hours until the first game of the Division week, I am starting to get anxious.

The Packers want to attack The 'Boys weakness on Defense, everyone is going to get their wish!

Plenty of screens and Lacy hitting the edges!

Nobody knows how healthy Aaron is, the less he needs to move around the better.

Tired of hearing about how good Dallas is , just about time to send them back home and get ready for Seattle!

Mucky Tundra (23-Apr) : is Aiyuk worth a 1st rounder?
Zero2Cool (23-Apr) : 49ers are seeking a 1st round pick in exchange for WR Brandon Aiyuk
Mucky Tundra (22-Apr) : Based on Gutes comments, now I don't feel as silly having 13 picks in my mock the other day

beast (21-Apr) : Sometimes looking extremely amazing, sometimes looking extremely lost
beast (21-Apr) : I haven't looked into the QBs, but some have suggested Maye has some of the most extremely inconsistent tape they've seen
beast (21-Apr) : Well it also sounds like Patriots are listening to trade offers, not that seriously considering any, but listening means they aren't locked
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Maye needs to be AFC
Mucky Tundra (21-Apr) : Not liking the idea of the Vikings getting Maye
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Vikings HC joked that he may or may not have sent flowers to Bob Kraft. That's where rumor came from.
beast (21-Apr) : Can't tell if this is real or BS, but some rumors about a possible Patriots/Vikings trade for #3 overall
dfosterf (21-Apr) : One playbook to my knowledge. I was shooting for facetious.
beast (20-Apr) : I'm not sure they have different playbooks for different OL positions, and Dillard run blocking is supposedly worse than his pass blocking..
dfosterf (19-Apr) : The only problem with that is he isn't a guard either.
dfosterf (19-Apr) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Kidding aside, I hope the best for him.
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Went to a Titans board. One comment there. Not very long. I quote: "LOL" They don't sound overly upset about our aquisition.
beast (18-Apr) : OT Dillard has been absolutely horrible... like OG Newman levels
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Suit him up and have him stand in front of the big board as a draft day cautionary tale.
