PHOENIX — Bill Belichick is clearly a big Mike McCarthy fan.

After watching McCarthy's Green Bay Packers beat his New England Patriots in November, Belichick's post-game handshake with the Packers coach was longer than the usual midfield formality. Longtime Patriots observers were taking aback by how long the sometimes gruff head coach lingered.

It was so noticeable that McCarthy was asked about it in his post-game press conference and said Belichick had been "very gracious" without delving into their conversation further.

Then to start his own postgame Q&A with reporters after the Packers' 26-21 victory at Lambeau Field, Belichick deviated from his usual modus operandi and opened with more praise of the Packers and McCarthy, something he'd also done during the week leading up to the game.

And so, maybe it shouldn't have been surprising when the four-time Super Bowl champion head coach said what he did about McCarthy during Tuesday morning's AFC coaches breakfast at the annual NFL Meetings at the Arizona Biltmore hotel.

But it sure was attention-grabbing.

Belichick, who is entering his 16th season as the Patriots' head coach, was asked about the importance of being willing to change despite having success. McCarthy, who is entering his 10th season as the Packers' coach, revamped the team's entire weekly schedule last year and this year is giving up the offensive play-calling duties in the wake of the team's collapse in the NFC Championship Game.

"Well, I mean, first of all, I'd say Mike's one of the best coaches in the league, one of the best coaches I've ever gone up against," Belichick replied. "I'm sure whatever he's doing is the right thing. I have a lot of respect for him. I'm sure whatever decisions he's making for the Green Bay Packers are good ones and ones that he thinks are right. I personally wouldn't question anything he does."

To that point, Belichick — speaking in a low, deep monotone — hadn't given many expansive answers to reporters seated at his table, so his reply on McCarthy was noteworthy.

"I'm just telling you, that's what I think," Belichick continued. "And I'd say since I've been with the Patriots, even going back to Cleveland, there's been times where I've met daily with the offense, times where I've met daily with the defense, times that I meet with the quarterbacks, times that I meet with the special teams. It's not the same every year, it's not the same every week, so I do what I feel like is best for our football team.

"And I'm sure that's what Mike's doing — whatever that is. I don't even know. Whatever it is. That's the way I look at it."

I feel that many Packers fans have an unfairly negative opinion of Mike McCarthy. If McCarthy doesn't get the respect of some Packers fans, at least he has the respect of arguably the greatest football coach currently in the game.

I personally think McCarthy is a fantastic coach, and even though he doesn't always make the right call on everything (who does?), it is clear his desire to grow and change as a coach, which is awesome to see.

Well McCarthy has really gotten the better of him both times they've faced off so I'm not surprised.

Belicheck can suck my dick. His success is primarily due to the political influence of his team's owner, imo.

Oh yeah and his QB is pretty good too.

I think what Belichick basically just said translate into,
He's a good coach, trust him... and leave me alone.

Which is a lot consisting what Belichick normal says translate into,
Leave me alone, I'm going to do the minimum presswork as I can get away

But a 4 point loss to the Patriots with your back-up QB (Flynn starting 3 TD/1 INT) and Brandon Jackson and Kuhn combing for 120 yards on the ground. And none of the Patriots going for 45 yards other than Danny Woodhead who got 59 yards on the ground. Tough they did spot Green-Ellis a 33 yard TD, but he failed to much else.

I don't really like Belichek being considered one of the greatest coaches ever. He is good and always has a competitive team, but his teams have never dominated Super Bowls - where they were head and shoulders better than the other team. I don't even like the media calling New England a dynasty because of how they won their Super Bowls. A play or two different and the could have just as easily lost those games. And then there is the accusations of cheating.

As for McCarthy, my beef with him is the playing not to lose issue he continues to have.

The Packers have a little bit of that mojo themselves, so I'm not gonna bitch about it. But let's be honest. There are many great coaches I'd take over Belicose.

His problem IMHO is that he is always afraid to lose. His team never really shows up ready and they're never really loose. They're never out of any game, no matter how far down they are, but (as we have seen) they never really put anyone away either.

Evidently the quote command isn't working, so here...

@steveishere, Belichick and the Pats actually demolished GB the first time they matched up vs the McCarthy led Packers to the tune of 35 - 0 in Lambeau.

@nerdmann, If you'd like to attain Belichick's success to his owner, I guess you haven't taken a good look at his career prior to NE in Cleveland of all places.

@DakotaT, Now we need to "dominate" Super Bowls to be considered great? .... .... .... ....5 rings over 3 decades doesn't justify anything eh?

As a football fan living in Wisconsin and socializing with Packer fans all the time, the amount of ignorance is baffling.

There are situations when you want to play conservative - unfortunately he doesn't always pick the right time.
