Not sure if should split this into it's own topic or not? OH well.

2013 Jarrett Boykin started eight games (663 snaps) and had 49 receptions, 681 yards with 3 TD's.
2013 James Jones started 14 games (847 snaps) and had 59 receptions, 817 yards and 3 TD's.

Are you going to pay a WR3 $3.3 million for that production when you are you high on someone younger and is going to cost you less than a $1 million for the season? Additionally, you know you have to shell out some cash to retain Randall Cobb.

Jarrett Boykin was a pleasant surprise in 2013 and equally disappointing in 2014.

In fact, the Packers would have likely easily made it to the Super Bowl had Rodgers just been a little more healthy.

What if.

The most important part of this is the Packers probably saved 5-7(ish) million (depending on how contract was structured) to re-sign JJ ($11m / 3 years = roughly 3.8/year - Packers paying him 875ish now), they got Ringo in exchange out of the ordeal, and now have a pretty darn productive 31 y.o. WR on their roster along with some other productive youth that I speculate may not have been drafted if JJ was retained initially.

Exactly. One could endlessly dive through the what if game and it would be nothing but conjecture. But the fact remains that the Packers absolutely did not need James Jones to make it to the Super Bowl last season. They had more than enough talent and simply had a historically bad choke. Sure, James Jones would have helped. Having more good players always helps. But the Packers didn't need him to go to the Super Bowl. From my perspective, that's all that can really be said about the issue without wild speculation. In fact, the Packers would have likely easily made it to the Super Bowl had Rodgers just been a little more healthy.

What if.

There are not many moves made that so easily and cheaply could have been the difference between NFC Championship and SB.

Who wouldn't spend 3 million or less extra to get to the SB rather than NFC championship?

If spending money were any way to guarantee a Super Bowl appearance, the Cowboys and Redskins come to mind as teams that would have been there recently.

James Jones does not win any of the four losses or the NFC Championship game. If anything, he could have cost the team a win seeing as he most likely would have slowed Davante Adams maturation process and Adams wouldn't have had those two key games against Patriots and Cowboys.

Packers lost to Seahawks by 20, to Lions by 12, to Saints by 21 and to the Bills by 8. I'm just not seeing how James Jones changes any of those outcomes nor the NFC Championship game. Now if you tell me that James Jones would have been on the onside kick team instead of Brandon Bostick ... then you might be onto something lol

More talent would always be nice. The same things you're saying about James Jones could be said about many free agents throughout the years. Many of them could have helped the Packers, theoretically. Perhaps many of those cases were mistakes, because Ted Thompson usually signs pretty good free agents when he actually signs them (e.g. Woodson, Pickett, Peppers, et al.). But I can't consider not overpaying for James Jones a mistake when the Packers should have made it to the Super Bowl anyway. Moreover, letting older players go is the heart of a draft and develop philosophy, for better or worse.

Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
