A team not usually known for its free-agency activity made a 313-pound splash Thursday. The Packers signed former Washington defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois on Thursday to a one-year, $3 million contract, a source confirmed to Pro Football Talk. Adam Schefter first reported the story, earning an undisclosed amount of Markman points in the process. Jean Francois, 30, appeared...

The amount of one year contracts being signed around the league this year is astounding. Good for the teams, horrible trend for players. Anyway, super glad we signed a defensive lineman finally. Someone tell us something about this guy.

Wonder if he's got a highlight reel... In any case, we lose Pennell and I guess Guion is in trouble again so this guy is the nose tackle along with Clark?

Grade: B. On their own, the signings of House and Jean Francois might not move the needle much. But together, they give the Packers solid options at positions of need, and they’re the kind of economical signings general manager Ted Thompson likes. Both were released by their former teams -- House after two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jean Francois after two years with the Washington Redskins. That means they won’t count against the Packers in the compensatory draft pick sweepstakes next offseason.

What it means: The Packers needed some insurance on the defensive line after Letroy Guion’s four-game suspension was announced earlier this month. Jean Francois is a lot like Guion -- an interior linemen who thrives in a limited role. While Guion might be the better run-stopper, Jean Francois could offer a little more pass rush. He had 3.5 sacks in two years with the Redskins and 12 overall in his eight-year career, which also includes stops with the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers (who drafted him in the seventh round in 2009).

What’s the risk?: One-year deals offer little risk and mostly upside. This also gives what is a young defensive line group some veteran presence and leadership to go along with Mike Daniels. Like Daniels, Jean Francois is known as a vocal leader, which could be good for second-year players like Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry. After losing veteran Julius Peppers to the Carolina Panthers, it can’t hurt to have another veteran on the defensive side of the ball.

1 year deals are not horrible for every player. If a guy excels in his "prove it" year he could earn a big pay day. Odds are he had an off year the season before thus it is a 1 yr deal or a substandard multi year one.

His last name makes me smile. We have a family in town that got tired of people slaughtering the pronunciation of their last name.

Instead of insisting everyone use the proper French pronunciation "Fra swa", they let people Anglicize it to "Fran coys".

Their kids were in school with out kids. So we were with them at a lot of different activities. For a couple of years I didn't know who people were referring to when they used the wrong pronunciation. One time when my wife used the correct pronunciation the husband said his dad gave up trying to correct people.

But I really like the Ricky Jean-Francois signing,

Clark, Jean-Francois and Guion are three good run stuffers, and other than maybe Guion, have some pocket push as well.

Daniels, Lowry and Ringo are three good pass rushers... though I still might take take a change on another pass rusher later on in the draft.

And more allows the Packers to not have to worry about DL as much... and can focus on CB, OLB and G more in the draft... also maybe S or ILB (which ever Burnett is going to play less of).
