Randall spent most of organized team activity practices and the three-day minicamp (which ended Thursday) working inside in the slot on the Packers' first-string nickel defense. The position, which defensive coordinator Dom Capers and cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt call the "Star," is viewed by the coaches as a starting spot because the Packers use so many sub packages, but it's still a part-time job — even if the Packers are in nickel and dime alignments almost 80 percent of the time during the course of a season.

It's a pun. But I like both Randall and Rollins.

No doubt injuries factored into last season's disappointing display. Randall should shine covering the slot receiver. It is what he is suited for instead of being out on an island against the opponent's # 1 WR.

Were I a GB Coach that had players coming off an injury or a poor performance season, I'd be doing all that I could to bolster the confidence of those players as they return for another season . Davon House and Kevin King are expected to join Burnett and Clinton-Dix in GB's Secondary in the fall. As a result Randall may just be competing for the Nickle Back slot .

The real concern should lie with the ILB's that will be called upon to cover opposing TE's . They will also need to run down RB's sweeping to the outside to catch footballs . [unsure]

The cut downs are a motivational factor that may eclipse winning or at least come close. Desperation may create a new level of competition for many players.

EX:
Two WR's might mirror each other running routes, but one has larger hands and catches more passes than the other.
-------------------or----------------------
Two players are great at pass blocking, but one is also better at run blocking.

Two players play the run well from the Inside Linebacker position , yet when it comes to pass coverage, one player is smarter/quicker on the uptake where a few milliseconds can make all the difference.

These are just a few of the things that players are closely evaluated on. The players know that making even the last spot on the roster pays Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars . [thumbup]

Makes sense. I assumed this example it would be players of similar physical abilities and doesn't count for seniority or getting cut due to contract future or present reasons.

I think he should be played in that nickle/star/woodson role is a very good question.

I've heard some rumors that the Packers want to take a look at Burnett playing there with Brice at SS.

It's hard for me to talk about Randall, because my recent memories of him are staying back and not mixing it up... I think because he was injured and making sure he didn't get beat over the top. Which slots guys have to worry about that a little less, because they normally have a guy over them. But since Randall was playing back, he let a lot of underneath stuff open, which is not what you want in a slot guy... but again, it might be unfair to judge him on that because of injury and protecting over the top.

I'm thinking House, Gunter and King are mainly outside guys... yes I know all three at some point have played inside roles (Gunter and King have both played Safety/slot some in college), but I think super quick slot guys would play into their weakness. Though Gunter against TEs does seem interesting to me for better physical/speed match-ups.

But I'm thinking Burnett, Randall and Rollins for the slot nickle position.

Though in general, watch out for Herb Waters!
Why? Because CB coach Joe Whitt Jr. said so!
Whitt compared Waters to Tramon Williams in general, with saying that he told reporters to watch out for Tramon, and he went from PS to starter in time... and now he's telling you to watch out for Herb!

Also because the Packers have good luck with CBs from Miami, even if Herb was a WR last year, he's now a CB and he came to the Packers from Miami. Also coach Witt has a history of turning former WRs into play makers... mostly in college, but Whitt helped Sam Shields (also from Miami).

dfosterf (9h) : The only problem with that is he isn't a guard either.
dfosterf (9h) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.
