Not sure what you observed to give you that impression. Just pointing out that warmup stretching today looks nothing like it did when I was in sports. When I started watching my daughters warm up before competitions It looked like they were just going through some motions while talking with their friends. Now that I've been more involved and coach some of my youngest sports teams, I've found more and more what they say today is how to stretch and warm up before practices and competitions. I've even started doing some of them to warm myself up before I play softball.

What they are doing may not look like much, what they are doing is effective in warming the body up.

During a game, we constantly see players walking up and down the sideline slapping asses with other players and coaches. And most people look and say how they are trying to keep the team "fired up", when in reality what they are doing is keeping their muscles warm.

Always amazing watching couch experts acting like they know more than actual professionals.

If you're going to target the hamstrings you dont want to do ass slaps; or hop on your toes or walk you want to do toe touches; one leg stabilizers; forearm lunges etc.; others can target quads...others can help with lower back muscles, etc. This is the type of stuff we should see the players doing throughout the game if they're going to have extended periods of inactivity.

9 out of 10 scientists agree that sideline ass-slapping reduces glute strains in football players by 75%.

Maybe they are in rehab without it being reported? I don't know, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see someone half assing it. I never knew me sharing my opinion on what I saw with my own damn eyes would be such a problem for folks to reason with. It's crazy. I could the wet water was wet and you'd find some way to argue against it.

I have sat through many pre game warm ups at Lambeau Field and I can tell you that there is a lot of halfassing going on on that field, including the position coaches that are supervising the warm-up period.
There is more bullshitting and laughing and joking around than serious warming up and stretching.
I have not really paid attention to the opposing teams to notice how they go about their business.

But these guys should be ready to play [a minimum of 3 20 min routines] before arriving at the stadium. The pregame stuff, should just be a tune-up because their last stretching routine occurred an hour or 2 before arriving.

Z2C brought up another critical thing: Hydration. Hydration is a 24/7 endeavor. These guys should not go to bed without a bottle of water on night stand and half the bottle should be drunk upon awakening even if its to get up to take a piss in middle of the night. Also, obtaining hydration thru things like tomatoes, broccoli or lettuce is key as well.

Riding the bike is a good warm-up for stretching; but can never be a substitute for actual stretching for extreme athletic activities. Physiology of stretching is way to complicated. EG. if your glutes are tight or fatigued it can cause problems in lower back and hamstrings. A routine needs to be established by a pro, and ADHERED to, that assures all muscles are in balance and well oxygenated. And I'm telling you if you are in tip top stretching shape at Noon, when the game starts, you will not be ready for full exertion at 3pm, late in 4th quarter, unless the muscles have remained oxygenated, relaxed and balanced.

Nerd has been harping on Hamstrings, rightly so, but this week we had at least 2 quad injuries. Though, they could have been from getting banged as well. BTW, Bahktierir's problem came when he did the splits in Seattle game. the quads may have been cause by game trauma and not a failure to stretch or hydrate. I'm guessing, but I'd think that too much focus on hamstrings could lead to quad pulls and strains.

And we have volumes of evidence indicating these guys are not stretching during the game. There is a legal doctrine Res ipsa loquitur. It was developed in 15th century England, when a worker, who was alone, was found dead in a wine cellar by a knock on the head and a barrel that was at one time on a rack above where the man laid was on the floor. The doctrine closed the gap to account for what no one could know for a 100% certainty, but it was damn probable; that is, the man was killed when the barrel rolled off the rack above his head.

Likewise, when we get 30-40-50 glimpses of full or partial sideline shots and no one is ever doing a toe touch or other stretching move. We dont have a video to monitor every move of every guy because Res ipsa loquitur allows us to conclude from what we do know that as a rule players are not straetcing during the game

Would custom heating pads for legs/shoulders/etc. , on the sidelines , be against any rules.
Different shaped pads for different body areas. The trainers and their staff would be responsible for their care and use. They could be used to keep players like WRs/CBs/or RBs from tightening up between series. Also, the coaches could converse with these players as they sit on the bench .

dfosterf (19-Apr) : The only problem with that is he isn't a guard either.
dfosterf (19-Apr) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.
