Since we have all been playing Armchair GM and firing TT, what direction would you take this team with drafts and signings given the opportunity?

As much as I hate the Cowboys and the Vikings I really like some of their approaches.

With the Cowboy model the idea of creating the best Offensive Line in the league and then drafting a stud RB makes sense. Add in our case the best QB of all time. How crazy would that be? I have always pushed for this.

The Viking model may not be possible with Aaron Rodgers at QB, but having a killer defense always gives you a chance. When your QB doesn't have to put up 30 to win it makes things a whole bunch easier come playoff time.

Like to hear what you would like to see the team do. Do we just continue to be average all over with an amazing QB like we are now?

But I have stated I'd look into TE Jimmy Graham, because I think he'd be better on a team that doesn't use him like a blocking TE like the Seahawks at times certainly do... the man's a tall/slow WR and I think he'll do better in a system that doesn't ask him to block nearly as often. But also be careful, because some team could throw huge amount of money at him because of his hype from the Saints days, but he's also made a comment which made it sound like he was admitting he's not as young and athletic as he used to be either.

For the draft, I'd focus on the passing game on both sides... last year I sometimes argued that OLB was the biggest need over CB... because it seems to take a group of 4 pass rushers, and Matthews and Perry were injury prone. But looking back, I think the Packers would also be in serious trouble if not for King too.

But I'd be looking into Edge rusher, CB, WR, OT looking for the best players... with the hope that DL is covered with Lowry and Adams keep on developing behind Daniels and Clark.

Jimmy Graham is intriguing. I am positive Ted Thompson will be gun shy to try and sign him. Always liked him in New Orleans and really thought he was a bad fit in Seattle. Hard not to think that he and Rodgers couldn't work some magic. Unfortunately I thought the same with Marty B. It would actually be a great first move by a new GM though if you come to think of it.

But reading between the lines of a number of different articles, I thought the time Thompson has selected was when his contract is up. (Murphy has said it runs through the 2018 season). So I don't think we'll officially see a new GM until 2019.

That being said, Ron Wolf did something interesting when he stepped out of the job... because he was passing it to HC Mike Sherman (and maybe because he was HC and not a full time draft guy), Wolf wanted to get Sherman a year of on the job training and after Wolf's last draft, I believe he said in an interview that he let Sherman act as GM for Ron Wolf's last year so Sherman could learn, experience and feel what the GM role was, without the media distractions. I've been wondering if Thompson might be trying that. Of course, some have been wondering if he might of already been trying it... because something seemed to change... though it could of just been what they looked for in a player.

One in a while, Thompson would draft a taller than average guy for the position but rarely would you see multiple guys in the same year... then came 2016. I believe Spriggs and Murphy are among Thompson top 4 tallest OL drafted, Fackrell and Lowry are taller than any other edge/DL guys I can remember Thompson has drafted. And I liked Blake Martinez, usually Thompson doesn't draft ILBers that I like... and Elliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst took a much stronger post selection talking role.

Then in 2017, the tallest CB I can remember ever being on the Packers in King... and the S Josh Jones was a SS/LB and the Packers almost never select those SS/LB... though they could of been became the Packers seem to change their scheme to have a SS often playing coverage ILB. And all the RBs and WRs picks looked strange but I think that was just need picks.

Some stuff from PFF for all teams, just posting the Packers stuff.

They're suggesting Edge Rush is currently the biggest need

Edge: Green Bay’s pass-rush has been too dependent on Nick Perry and Clay Matthews and neither player is productive enough to keep the Packers out of the edge defender market. They should be targeting another player who can rush the passer off the edge in the draft, giving them more options on the outside to complement Mike Daniels and the emerging Kenny Clark on the interior.

Aaron Jones is standing out.

4. Aaron Jones, RB, Green Bay Packers
PFF Grade: 84.3
Elite Stat: Jones has picked up a first down or touchdown on 26.9 percent of his carries, the fourth-best rate among RBs.

Jones only carried the ball five times on Monday night against the Detroit Lions as the Packers found themselves trying to play catch-up throughout the game. His 84.2 running grade this season though ranks sixth among running backs and when the Packers have been able to feed him the ball this season, he’s rewarded them with steady production. Even when Jones doesn’t pick up a first down or touchdown, he almost always at least gets something: His 13.4 stuff rate (the percentage of a player’s rushing attempts that result in 0 or fewer yards) is the sixth-lowest among running backs through the first nine weeks.

All I've wanted this team to do is try to better itself. It doesn't want to better itself, it wants to just flatline by replacing parts with the same parts.

When it comes to drafting, I'd like to see the org draft the true best player available. It lies and says it does, but don't you find that curious that we're always drafting the BPA for the biggest need we have, especially in Round 1? If you're going to draft for need in Round 1, you're really hurting yourself because you are not drafting the most talented player, you're drafting the most talented player at that position and he may be 30 slots below the actual best player on the board.

If we have a huge glaring need I would like to see the org be aggressive and get a player who fills that need. Calais Campbell came up recently. How do you think he may have helped? Yes, there are financial constraints, that's understood, however, we need to be more proactive in filling our needs with proven veterans not drafting non BPA's and hoping they develop in 3 years.

Wolf went out and basically bought a DL for us. White, Dotson, Jones... integral to winning the SB. Traded for a QB. The only time we won with the better QB, in Rodgers, is when Ted got Woodson because nobody wanted him, and Pickett signed after being a bust with the Rams. Also, Ted drafted better. If you're going to fail in the draft as much as he has lately you need to use FA to fix it, otherwise you're pushing back the clock years by not doing so. We don't have that kind of time.

Overall, I just want to see URGENCY. It's missing. It's ho hum everything is just fine. It isn't. We've wasted enough time. Create some passion and fire and show urgency in approach... not this middling flatlining we do under Ted. It's a disservice to all of us.

What we have in place has proven to be ineffective in fixing the D. That needs to be remedied yesterday. A HC who has stood by a yawning DC in Dom needs to be removed as badly as the DC. He's enabled this crap show year after year. A winner wouldn't stomach a few months of this crap much less years.

Get a GM who has personality and passion. Ted has neither. Get a HC who will make changes when needed and not play the he's my buddy game so he stays. Can't win like that.

Build a bridge with the fans. Ted has remained cloaked and aloof. That's great if you're above reproach, but he isn't.

The whole aura of this org is wrong. It's soft, passionless, and stale. I can't believe anyone couldn't see that and wouldn't want that to change. We all know Ted and Mike are who they are, and that's not good enough.

If I was GM, I'd be looking into CB Vontae Davis for next year... because after two down seasons with injuries, he might be had for pretty cheap, while still having a lot of talent when fully healthy... and Packers need depth at CB because it seems like one or two of them always go down.

Davis was released by the Colts after he ignored the Colts and sought a second doctors opinion for his injury, and decided against Colts wishes to get surgery. While not listening is normally a bad thing, the Colts have come under question about their media staff... thinking players are healthy or will be healthy very soon, when in reality they're not. The the Colts Owner seem to be under the delusion that the only injury is inside the players head . (Which I can't help but wonder if that might be a psychedelic delusion, considering the Colts Owners drug history ).

But if you can sign him for cheap enough, at minimum he might be a very good veteran back-up in case House doesn't resign, or Rollins isn't fully healthy... of course that's assuming Davis recovers from his own surgery/injury.

First off - need to look at coaching staff. This team needs some fresh ideas. Need a HC that can maximize what he is given to work with. Need a DC that will scheme according to what his players strengths are - and find ways to COVER THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING FIELD!!!

Evaluate exactly what is available in the draft. Trade up if necessary to get the guys you need rather than amassing half of the 7th round and hoping a couple stick. Pass rushers have been needed badly, so I would start there. Cut the dead weight and use the wasted money to lure some free agents for positions that will not be fillable via the draft. Large amounts of unspent cap money might as well be lit on fire.

Continuity is necessary to build team chemistry. Spend a few bucks to keep the younger players that have been developing well. It is painful to see our good young players leave after their rookie contracts and tear it up in a different jersey. We suffer through their rookie mistakes, as if we are ok with grooming them - to be successful somewhere else. Hardly a plan for success.

With Jordy getting older and some mediocre receivers on the roster, I would be shopping for a younger WR with some speed and height. We need that deep threat to stretch the defense. Don't get me wrong - we have some talent Aaron Rodgers WR, just feels like we need one big time guy to put us over the top.

I would also evaluate the strength and conditioning staff - since we seem to be unable to field a healthy team past week 3. I don't see other teams decimated by injuries every single year like us. Look into what they are doing, and what they could be doing better. If they are truely doing a half assed job - can them.

It's odd to me reading we need edge rushers as it's our #1 need? Not that I disagree, but exactly how much money do we have tied up in OLB with Perry and Clay? It's sickening we've dedicated that much of our cap to that position and it's still our #1 need? Heads should roll. There are so many areas like this once the microscope is zoomed in that it's crazy changes haven't been made.

This offseason I was aghast at the "fix" to our woeful CB situation. I think that need is greater than our rush understanding that pass rush helps the secondary.

Broken record, here, but if you don't have management that can fix something after focusing hard on fixing it, there's really only one other option.

dfosterf (21-Apr) : One playbook to my knowledge. I was shooting for facetious.
beast (20-Apr) : I'm not sure they have different playbooks for different OL positions, and Dillard run blocking is supposedly worse than his pass blocking..
dfosterf (19-Apr) : The only problem with that is he isn't a guard either.
dfosterf (19-Apr) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.
