Time for Packers to Shop Quarterback Brett Hundley

Hunter Noll / FanSided via NFL Spin Zone

The Green Bay Packers have a potential-filled quarterback in Brett Hundley. However, Aaron Rodgers isn’t going anywhere, so it’s time to start shopping the backup.

Brett Hundley gives the Green Bay Packers something a lot of teams want. He’s a young quarterback with tons of potential, who’s already shown he’s got talent. Of course, the Packers don’t need him thanks to Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers is signed through 2019, and he’ll get another contract after that one as well. Oh, and he’s one of the best quarterbacks of all-time. While it’s nice to have a good backup quarterback, it’s hard to convince a young quarterback to spend his entire career as a second-string. At just 23, Hundley has a long NFL future ahead of him, but it doesn’t appear it will be with the Packers.

The quarterback market is a little odd at the moment. There are a few teams who don’t really have answers for their problems, and most experts aren’t sold on this draft class. Therefore, a 23-year-old who’s studied behind one of the greatest quarterbacks ever for a few seasons seems like someone any team would be happy to have.

Due to his young age and solid potential, Hundley could yield a solid return for the Packers. A few draft picks could help Green Bay fill out positions that they actually need help with. In the meantime, they could find a veteran quarterback ready to serve as a backup.

Rumor on the street is that Green Bay could get a couple of first-round picks and possibly a third and/or fourth for Hundley, so this could turn out to be an exciting offseason for the Packers in a year in which they don't have a ton of cap room to play with.

He plays the way Mike trained him, scared.

If nothing else, the 2017 season should clearly show the importance of a backup QB. GB's Hundley will never be a Favre or a Rodgers, but he was getting better each game he played. Game experience in a team's system is huge. Hundley will never be a starter, but he can be a trusted backup QB.

As for trades, IMO, CBs and WRs and LBs would head my trade list. Also, the professionals in GB's front office are aware of the "cap" and will I'm sure field a team that fits below the designated max money level.

GB's new GM will be most interesting to watch as he builds the 2018 Packers. [biggrin]

There is not a chance in hell the Packers would get a first round draft pick for Hundley. If they can, I would take that deal IMMEDIATELY without hesitation as they have a plethora of other needs. I would rather they get what they can for him and sign a FA like McCarron.

What has he shown that would warrent any better then a 4th round pick?
He sure didn't impress me.
If we don't get a capable backup QB, and Rodgers gets hurt, it would be another wasted season.

Any team even considering giving GB "a couple of first-round picks", not to mention tossing in "a third and/or fourth for Hundley" should have their GM tar'd & feathered & run out of town.

You have to wonder if two 1st round picks is worth trading your future franchise QB away. He can read the field as I've only seen JaMarcus Russell do it, throws it deep as often as Chad Pennington did and decision making that makes me think of Tim Couch. He's like three first round picks in one.

Also, IMO, GB still has a few seasons before they must start looking for Rodgers replacement.

If 2017's QB problem were to occur again, I don't see GB succeeding any better than most teams that loose their #1 QB. That said, GB with Hundley would fare better than with a rookie or a QB new to GB's system.

If a trade is to be made, trade for a Pass Rusher or a proven CB.

dfosterf (23h) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.

Martha Careful (5-Apr) : Diggs has not stepped up in the playoffs and has a high cost
beast (5-Apr) : Probably not going to let Diggs walk away unless he's horrible... but according to reports he also might not be as good as he used to be.
beast (5-Apr) : The 25th pick in the draft has been an offensive player since 2017, 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB, 1 OC
Mucky Tundra (5-Apr) : Odd, why give up a 2025 2nd Rounder for him if you're just gonna let him walk?
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : Texans to let Diggs be free agent in '25
buckeyepackfan (4-Apr) : 49r's aign RB Patrick Taylor.
Martha Careful (4-Apr) : Reversion to the mean would indicate we will keep it
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : It's also been utilized in a trade in 14 of the past 20 years
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : The 25th pick in the draft hasn't been made by it's original holder since 2016.
Mucky Tundra (4-Apr) : Gotta imagine that Green Bay vs Houston will be a primetime game this upcoming season
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : No. Kill QB. No worries. 😁
Mucky Tundra (3-Apr) : Diggs, Collins, Dell and Schultz is gonna be tough to cover
