What to expect from Green Bay Packers third-round pick Oren Burks this season. In the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Oren Burks out of Vanderbilt. This pick immediately got me excited. Burks was a player I had my eye on prior to the draft. At 6-foot-3, 233 pounds,

I have to admit when I saw the Headline I wondered who Oren was. I have thought so much about the 2 new CBs I forgot all about him.

When GB drafted Oren I was pleased. I really don't know a whole lot about him but my first reaction is that he reminds me of Brian Urlacher. Not for anything he has done of the field per se. IIRC, Urlacher played a hybrid LB-FS in college.

There size is similar too. Brain a little bigger and a little faster @ 6-4 258 4.47 and Oren 6-3 233 4.59 who played some safety in college and likes to run from sideline to sideline.

We may have a keeper. Let him get a year or two under his belt playing sub packages.

wpr,

I know it was a typo when you said "Brain [sic] (you meant Brian) a little bit bigger and faster"

True, but from all I've read and heard, this kid not only has football smarts, but real smarts (Vanderbilt is not New Mexico.) I am as excited about him as I am the two corners. That brain power will more than make up for the 1/20 of a step lost in 40 time vis a vis Urlacher.

This kid will be a high level coach one day...if he wants to be

Agreed it will take him a year, maybe two to get up to speed. But we've needed someone who can cover over the middle for, ... how long was Dom Capers here?

Last year the Packers drafted a SS/LB tweener named Josh Jones, who started the season playing at hybrid LB because the Packers had a lot of Safety depth.... as injuries hit, Burnett had to play slot CB and Brice was injured, meaning Jones was asked to focus in at SS a lot more for the rest of the season.

With Burnett leaving via FA and Jones moving to SS for good (according to reports),

I'm expecting LB Oren Burks to replace early season Josh Jones in the coverage LB role
Though I'd say Jones looked more physical aggressive and better nose for the ball, but still... with Pettine's system that seems to be about spreading the front attack and hitting at different angles while asking for a lot of one on one coverage on the back end, with give some lighter guys chances for some jack of all trades coverage LB role like this.
