Shawn Wagner said:
The jury is still out on last year’s fifth-round pick as he looks to make his Lambeau Field debut, but he should bring versatility and competition to the offensive line. With uncertainty at the right guard position last offseason, the Green Bay Packers entered the 2018 NFL Draft without a clear-cut starter on the roster. Ultimately, they added late-May signee Byron Bell to compete with returners Justin McCray and Lucas Patrick for spot starts throughout the regular season.
But before Bell was signed, there was a dark horse candidate to win the starting role: rookie Cole Madison.
The fifth-round pick from Washington State was a 47-game starter for the Cougars at right tackle and an integral piece of the Mike Leach air-raid offense. Despite having to translate his skills in the spread offense to the pro style of the NFL, there was plenty of hope that Madison could compete for a starting job in training camp or at least an immediate depth role. As has been documented in previous articles, that plan never came to fruition after Madison spent last season on the reserve/did not report list.
But with the news on Monday that Madison is coming back to the Green Bay organization, there is optimism he can still be another critical find for the Packers’ offensive line on the draft’s third day, following in the steps of former players Josh Sitton, T.J. Lang, and David Bakhtiari. While caution must be exercised in Madison’s return from a redshirt year as he gets back up to playing speed, there remains the chance he could become another valuable swingman on the line with Billy Turner sliding in at right guard in 2019.
In fact, “versatility” was the biggest buzz word used by Packers’ scout Sam Seale to describe Madison following his selection last April. Seale felt strongly that Madison could play guard despite making all of his college starts at tackle because of his length, strength, and footwork. He also characterized Madison as a “mean” person on the football field with competitiveness, a trait desired at the guard position. With his experience in a heavy passing system at Washington State, Madison’s pass blocking was favorable for transitioning into the Green Bay system last year.
The reinstatement of Madison, if he can live up to Seale’s scouting report, would be a vital addition to the Green Bay line. But it should not deter the Packers from continuing to add competition up front this draft season, especially at tackle.
Guard has seemingly been solidified with Lane Taylor and Turner entrenched as the current starters, and McCray and Patrick making up the depth behind them. Bakhtiari, Bryan Bulaga, and Jason Spriggs form the team’s top tackle options, along with last year’s undrafted free agent keep Alex Light. Center Corey Linsley will start again in 2019, but the Packers did not carry a true backup center on the roster last season.
Green Bay went with nine offensive linemen on the initial 53-man roster in 2018 and there are 10 names already listed above, counting Madison. Yet, it is imperative for the Packers to begin adding talent to the line with the tackle position exposed in recent seasons and Bulaga entering a contract year. Madison’s ability to help in this role is something that will not be known until training camp, but should not be counted on. Expect the Packers to continue exploring second-day tackle prospects such as Ole Miss’s Greg Little and Washington’s Kaleb McGary who have already made the trip to Green Bay as part of the team’s 30 allowed visits.
Even as Madison’s impact remains unknown for the Packers next season and beyond, his decision to come back to football is a good thing for Green Bay. It is an opportunity for the organization to see what it has in its former fifth-round pick after all, and with some luck that pick could pay dividends in the Packers’ long-term plans as well. But for now, despite many possible roster acquisitions between now and the start of the preseason slate, Madison’s return simply represents the addition of a once-promising young player to a position requiring extra competition.

While I welcome Madison to the Packers and wish him all the best, I can't imagine a 5th round draft pick who never played a down in the NFL would change any teams draft strategy.

They will still take a close look at a few OL both in the draft and as UDFA. It is the prudent thing to do.

Plus, you don’t know if he really plans to stick around, with what happened last year.
I hope he has been able to deal with it and can go on in a positive way with his life.

KRK (53m) : It’s always easy to sit in a broadcast booth and rate players. It’s another matter to construct a team
Zero2Cool (2h) : Liked Mayock analyzing draft players, really good football IQ. Just not sure how he's gonna do as GM.
KRK (2h) : It is nice to have team like Oakland and Arizona who are totally dysfunctional. I only wish they were in our division.
Pack93z (2h) : Still amazes me the at Mayock is a GM... lol
Pack93z (2h) : Gruden and Mayock running a team.. not a recipe for .. umm success!
Zero2Cool (2h) : How's that for dysfunctional lol
Zero2Cool (2h) : The belief is they don’t know who to trust and wanted to clear the room.
Zero2Cool (2h) : Sources: #Raiders coach Jon Gruden and GM Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend and they are not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don’t know who to trust and wanted to
Zero2Cool (2h) : Ignore those who are bothersome to you. It's easy!
Pack93z (2h) : Absolutely...
Rockmolder (2h) : Still one big, dysfunctional family.
Pack93z (2h) : Glad to see the place hasn't changed... DOH!
Cheesey (2h) : Now he’s going after wpr. He needs to be put in his place. We don’t need bullies that think THEY are so special that they can crap all over everyone else.
Cheesey (2h) : Some cheesey picking on a younger kid? Smokey is the bully here, not me. Just read all the garbage he spews.
Smokey (3h) : Keep your Vagisil for your own use wpr. You might also keep your nose out of things that don't concern you.
Zero2Cool (3h) : What posting needs an amendment? Doesn't inclusion mean, included? I'm so confused. I'm gonna get my crayons...

Smokey (14h) : As for the non-inclusion of the bye week as part of the posted schedule (again), redacting is the "IN" thing to do. It's not a matter of national security though. (or) are you not talented enough to a
Smokey (14h) : gbguy20 playing with crayons is not condescending, rather it lowers the comprehension level to where he can comprehend. It's not some cheesey 14 yr old picking on a 10 yr old at the playground.
Zero2Cool (18h) : Ha. That's neat. It's pulling Packers games from the NFL Pick'em. Which is correct. Interesting..
gbguy20 (19h) : so you don't like him because he's old then Kevin?
gbguy20 (19h) : you're right. and the bye week isn't listed ffs

Zero2Cool (22h) : Eric Berry = over rated
gbguy20 (22h) : Eric Berry imo
Cheesey (23h) : I get it. You can’t do it all. But you have to admit, there’s a pattern here.(well, you don’t HAVE to admit it!)LOL!
Cheesey (23h) : Oh...ok....a REASON then. LOL!
Zero2Cool (23h) : I can't catch every comment. And quite frankly, there's a few folks I jsut do not read.
Zero2Cool (23h) : It is not an excuse Alan.
Cheesey (18-Apr) : Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t talk down to people just because they are younger then me.
Cheesey (18-Apr) : Wow...”poor delivery”? Dang, if I knew just being old gives you an excuse to belittle people, I would have used it!
gbguy20 (18-Apr) : stop being young, kevin.
Zero2Cool (18-Apr) : No, he does mean well. He just has really poor delivery. I'm young, so my words to him are echo'd off walls.
gbguy20 (18-Apr) : its a trap
Cheesey (18-Apr) : Grab a stick and hit him upside the head? LOL!
dyeah_gb (18-Apr) : Anyone know how to beat the final boss in Sekiro?
Cheesey (18-Apr) : YOU are the only bully in this site. And Zero, he does NOT mean well. Telling gbguy to go back to his crayons? When is he going to get dealt with?
Cheesey (18-Apr) : Then look in the mirror to see a REAL bully.
Zero2Cool (18-Apr) : That is a true.
Cheesey (18-Apr) : smokey, read your own post where you call me a bully for making fun of a guys name.
gbguy20 (18-Apr) : lf up.
gbguy20 (18-Apr) : the guy takes shots at people constantly and then runs and hides as soon as they reply so he can pretend to be the bigger person. all the while calling people bullies and children trying to prop himse
Zero2Cool (18-Apr) : lol ... forgive him, he thinks he runs the site, admins the site, owns the site, and is boss hoss of all. He means well though.
gbguy20 (18-Apr) : continuing your condescending posts is very hypocritical of you, smokey. practice what you preach...every now and then, at least.
