Packers sign former Lions tight end Michael Roberts, per report

To the posters who really know this stuff ( I don't)....if there a chance the Packers cut Jimmy Graham?

IIRC, there was a date sometime this summer that they would save a chunk of money if they did.

Nerd also pointed out that Graham had quite a few drops in OTA...I am just wondering.

This was a no name waiver claim. It doesn't affect Jimmy directly. But, if 3-4 guys step up this summer he could be gone. Unfortunately we paid his huge roster bonus in march. From what I remember there isn't much savings left this year.

I never even heard of “Michael Roberts” until this thread, so I’m not overly concerned that he won’t be playing here.

They could cut him and save $4m in cap, but they would have $8.666m in dead cap. I don't think there is much logic to devoting 8.666m in cap space to not having Jimmy Graham on the team.

Next year the savings would be $8m and the cap hit $3.666m, so cutting him seems likely unless he has a big year.

I had heard if him a few days before when the Lions tried to trade him to the Patriots but he failed the Patriots physical. There was probably not much chance he passed the Packers physical either but there was no harm done in bringing him in for a look.

They can keep that revolving door going at the back end of the roster as far as I am concerned. Chances are they won't land any big help so I won't get too excited over any of them but all they need is a guy who is better than the someone else to make the roster stronger.
