GREEN BAY, Wis. – On Oct. 3 against Pittsburgh, Green Bay Packers All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander suffered a serious shoulder injury.

A few days later, a top cornerback became available.

The New England Patriots and Stephon Gilmore, unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension, decided to part ways.

A four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Gilmore was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, when he led the league in interceptions (six) and passes defensed (20). Better yet, he allegedly wanted to play for the Packers and was just about ready to go following December quad surgery.

It all seemed perfect. Until the Carolina Panthers – his hometown team – swooped in and acquired Gilmore for a sixth-round draft pick.

While all of that was happening, Rasul Douglas was in Green Bay. About an hour after the Gilmore-to-Panthers trade became official and right as the Packers were about to hit the practice field on that Wednesday, the team announced it had signed Douglas off Arizona’s practice squad.

Nobody – maybe not even Douglas – could have predicted the impact he would make.

I tried telling you folks, sometimes the best deals made are the ones that weren't. But no you were all we need to restructure five salaries to get Gilmore!!! 🤣🤣

Both Douglas and Campbell are proof that you do not always need to sell the farm to get an effective player! Look at the Rams. They do not look better with both Odell and Miller in their lineup - at least at this point. At the same time, good coaching puts players in situations where they can be successful! Kudos to GB players, coaches and GM!

I totally agree, like not getting OLB Mack when some wanted to sell the farm to get him...

Or me wanting JJ Watt (seriously, I do which Clark had another stud DT to open the DT up even more!)

That being said we still possibly could of gotten both Douglas and Gilmore, without restructuring a single contract... at least if the Patriots would have been willing to pay the contract in exchange for a higher draft pick from the Packers than a 6th...

I can't say I wanted Gilmore. Douglas has certainly been invaluable. I had no expectations for him when he was signed. In Gute we trust. He has proven that he knows what he is doing time and time again.
