Rodgers' strong start

On Aug. 14, returning from Packers training camp after watching two practices and talking to quarterback Aaron Rodgers during lunch, I was on the same flight home with a friend from Dallas who happened to be a Green Bay fan. He told me he doubted that Rodgers could win more than five games. My reply: I thought they'd win 10.

So far, so good.

Rodgers is now 2-0 as the Packers' starting quarterback, following a 48-25 win in Detroit in which the former first-round pick passed for 328 yards and 3 TDs. Since everyone wants to compare Rodgers to his legendary Packers predecessor, here are some notes to consider:

Favre's second career win came in his fifth career start.

Favre's first career three-TD game came in his 10th start.

Favre's first career 300-yard passing game came in his 25th start.

Favre was sacked four times in his first two starts; Rodgers has been sacked just once.

Granted, these are just numbers and you can't compare the the 1992 Packers to this year's team. But I have been very impressed with Rodgers' performance. He started with a solid outing in the Monday night opener -- facing as much pressure as a quarterback could possibly face by replacing Favre. Then, yesterday, he started on the road for the first time in a place that is usually tough for opposing quarterbacks -- in his first five starts in Detroit, Favre threw 10 interceptions.

After throwing for more than 200 yards and three scores in the first half, Rodgers saw the Lions actually come from behind and take a 25-24 fourth quarter lead. How did he respond? On the next possession, following a short run and a false start, Rodgers faced a second-and-13 from his own 17. He saw a favorable matchup with receiver Greg Jennings lined up in the slot, and it looked like he called an audible on the play. The result was a 60-yard completion that set up the go-ahead field goal. It was a huge, huge play.

Rodgers is having a way better start then Brett has. Hopefully he will pan out better then Brett.

This will be a weekly ax to grind.. we are only two games into the season.. I really hope the media finds something else to focus on..

Maybe the Pats can get caught cheating again and the evidence not get destroyed this time around.

Or maybe Al Davis can have a complete meltdown and fire Kiffin and 75% of the front office.. or Pacman can get is trouble yet again bringing someone like TO in with him this time.. Or Briggs or Urlacher can do something silly again.. maybe date the Brit Brit this time..

Something to stop this what will probably be weekly comparisons of these QB's.. it isn't valid any way you try to compart them.. they have different core players and gameplans for them to utilize currently.

And if you try to compare Rodgers first 2 starts here vs Brett's here.. it isn't even close to the talent around them. Jennings vs.. whom Taylor or Epps.. Brett had one real weapon in 92.. Sharpe.. after that it was the Taco Wallaces of the 05 season. Just not fair on any plane.. so I would rather not even bother.

I would rather Rodgers establish his own style and rep at the QB spot.. not trying to live in someones shadow and constantly be compared with the numbers. As Steve Young has said before.. that is a terrible monkey to have scratching your back.

Yes. These comparisons annoyed me at first, but it was inevitable. The QB who took over after Favre was going to be under an enormous microscope. I'm just gonna try and go with it.

It's a lot easier to do when the team is undefeated. 🙂

Sadly enough, I don't think anything will stop the comparisons for long.
As soon as the next horse is beaten to death, the Media will jump right back onto the Favre/Rodgers horse which is one tough horse.
I just don't think this horse is going to die.

Well, I would settle for "almost as good" or even "capable of being mentioned in the same breath." And I see no reason why, as long as he stays healthy, Rodgers can't have a great career in Green Bay. What I like best about him is that he really seems unflappable. If he can tolerate all of the scrutiny he's been under and play so well on the national stage in his first career start, he should be able to handle the playoffs. But first things first--the Cowboys on Sunday night!

I agree that the comparison in this article is very unfair to Favre. I don't mind comparisons because they are inevitable, but in order to be meaningful, they need to be more thoughtful than this one.

Look at it this way. Perhaps Gil Brandt is not trying to make it sound like Aaron is a better player in his first few games. Perhaps he is saying that the team Aaron is playing on is a better team and because of this he has fewer ints and sacks and has gotten the wins, 3 TDs and the 300 yard game quicker than Brett did.

Rodgers had more bench time than BF did so I thinking the learning curve is a little skewed there. Favre had more on the job training than Aaron Rodgers did so the comparison is skewed IMHO.

There will be the comparisons.........until Favre loses a few more games, and the Jets fall out of contention for a playoff spot. Then the Favre "love fest" will be over and the sharks will move on to something else to "feed" on.
