Offense was unacceptable

From The Associated Press:

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Aaron Rodgers' 50-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings was a master stroke, allowing the Green Bay Packers to snatch the lead from a bitter division rival with just 1:11 left on the clock.

But the big play covered up a long list of offensive deficiencies.

Despite the season-opening 21-15 victory over the Chicago Bears, the team's offensive meetings have been anything but fun going into Sunday's home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"We're proud of the fact that we scored when we needed to," Rodgers said Wednesday. "But we're not happy or content or OK with the way we played offense for the first 58 minutes. We did things we're not accustomed to doing. We made mistakes we know we're better than. We need to clean that up.

"As professionals and as members of the Green Bay Packers in this offense we hold ourselves to pretty high standards. So the way we played Sunday was unacceptable," he said.

The Packers couldn't protect Rodgers, giving up four sacks and forcing their second-year starter to scramble out of trouble several other times; as Packers coach Mike McCarthy noted, even the decisive touchdown pass was blocked incorrectly.

Beyond that, the Packers had too many penalties and couldn't run the ball, forcing them into far too many second-and-longs that led to third-and-forevers -- situations the Packers don't spend a lot of time planning for.

"I was writing on the back of a napkin," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin joked.

If not for an impressive effort by the new 3-4 defense and the big Rodgers-to-Jennings play, the Packers easily could have lost at home despite forcing new Bears quarterback Jay Cutler into four interceptions.

It was a surprisingly poor debut for an offense that appeared to be nearly unstoppable in the preseason, when Green Bay's first-stringers punted only once.

McCarthy seemed most concerned about the lack of pass protection.

"You can't have your quarterback take that many hits," McCarthy said.

"That's not the way we're designed and that's not the way we're going to play."

Much of the postgame media blame centered on new right tackle Allen Barbre, who wasn't able to handle Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye.

Barbre played better in the second half, but he also appeared to be getting help from running backs and tight ends.
Philbin said Barbre struggled with fundamental techniques; it's not that he didn't know who he was supposed to block, he just didn't do it correctly.

"We could sit up there and say our quarterback's never going to get hit," Philbin said. "But the reality of the National Football League, as we said to our quarterbacks, you're going to get hit. Now, do we want our quarterback to get hit four times and sacked four times in a game? Absolutely not."

Barbre is trying to replace long-standing right tackle Mark Tauscher, who sustained a knee injury near the end of last season and was not re-signed. Coaches appear to be sticking with the 2007 fourth-round draft pick -- for now, anyway.

"I felt he was over it watching him practice today," McCarthy said. "Allen Barbre is a very tough individual. He's a first-year starter, he made some mistakes."

McCarthy reiterated that Barbre was hardly the only one to blame for the offense's struggles. The Packers had only 76 yards rushing, averaging 3.5 yards per carry.

"We had a number of players on offense that did not have a winning performance," McCarthy said. "They've been corrected, and we expect them all to move on, and as an offense, we need to play a lot better than we did Sunday."

Rodgers said his confidence in the offensive line hadn't been shaken by their shaky performance in the opener.

"I have a lot of trust in those guys," Rodgers said.

"I think the feeling with those guys is they don't want me to get hit anymore.

At least that's what they told me."

Rodgers is a funny guy with that lost comment. If I was ARod I would be scared to drop back to much knowing that the RT sucks

Well, we got to read what he said, now let's speculate on how he really feels about his level of protection from that offensive (now there's a double entendre' word, that there "offensive") line.

I'll go first.

If you watch the whole video, it gets boring, redundant, monotonous in it's theme...almost to a sickening degree.

How appropriate.

This one also conveys my version of video venting:

Our o-line coaching staff watches a training film for next game.

Seems to have struck the exact level of competence which they seek.

Can ya tell that this member is not quite over the o-line situation just yet?

Mucky Tundra (17h) : No time for talking! Back to work beast!
beast (17h) : You saw only 4,201 of my mocks? 🥺 I think that means you missed more than half of them 😢
dfosterf (21h) : Does anyone know what Lambeau field improvements got put on hold? My guess would be for the 2025 draft
Zero2Cool (23h) : It's like listen, you made 4,201 mocks, no shit.
Zero2Cool (23h) : Cuz during the draft "I had them mocked there!" as if it's amazing.
Zero2Cool (23h) : They're fun to do once in awhile. It's people who think they are "content" that annoy me.
dfosterf (23h) : Against tbd
dfosterf (23h) : Answer to your question is yes, it's a Thursday, will be the Chiefs aga
dfosterf (23h) : Luckily for all concerned, I don't post them. I did one, but that was like 25 mocks ago
Zero2Cool (23h) : NFL 2024 gonna start Sept 5th isn't it???
Zero2Cool (23h) : Ugh... kids these days!
dfosterf (23h) : I'm gonna go do some more mock draft hell instead 🤪
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Did we do one of those prediction threads yet for 2024 season?
dfosterf (27-Mar) : In my city, they are playing the nimby game, in order to keep some railroad tracks vs. 2 professional sports teams and a concert venue.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : And/Or a city council, of which I haven't seen a good one in a very long time
dfosterf (27-Mar) : That sounds like a Mayor, not a city.
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers halt scheduled 80mil upgrade of stadium until lease agreement talks are restarted
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : City of Green Bay puts Packers' Lambeau Field lease talks on hold
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers 1 of 3 teams to vote no on new kickoff rule.
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Packers sign another Kicker
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Lengthy explanation at PFF if you click the link
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Kickoff rules officially changed.ngthy explan
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : lol
Cheesey (26-Mar) : 2009? No thanks! One open heart surgery is enough!
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Good for you!
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Yes. That's the one.
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Is that "Lady Dugan" per chance?

Mucky Tundra (26-Mar) : BAH GAWD! THAT'S CHEESEYS MUSIC!
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Gutekunst said early stages of Jordan Love contract being discussed.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Shouldn't be penalized cuz official screwed up
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Hip drop is not. Super confusing. Referees job is harder
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Swivel hip drop is banned
dfosterf (25-Mar) : The hip drop enforcement will be in the form of fines, etc. Not flags
dfosterf (25-Mar) : A major foul will be enforced on the offense if there are offsetting penalties in a change of possession situation
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Teams will receive a 3rd challenge if 1 was successful. Previously, it took 2
