Oh my God am I surrounded by Viking crybabies this week, but anyway, I was wondering what people's thoughts are on the 5 yard bump rule while playing press coverage versus the cover 2 scheme most teams now run.

I keep explaining to my purple friends that Woody and Al get by with a little extracurricular activity because they are seasoned Vets who played corner that way all their careers prior to the Peyton Manning rule changes.

I prefer the old school corner play myself, how about the rest of you?

The problem is the rules these days are geared against it.. it is the most effective way to play the position bar none if you have the talent to run the scheme.

Honestly, the Tampa Two and its mates are put in place to do two things, minimize the penalties and cover for corners that can't play the position in a face up manner.

I love the way we play the game if they can stay even in the match ups.. but when we are in a mismatch (TO, Buress, WR of that ilk) we need to have a secondary game plan in our pocket.

But as to your question.. heck yes bump and run, jamming at the line of scrimmage is a treat to watch.

Oh and we do get away with a little bit extra bump or hand play.. there is no doubt about it.

...And we occasionally get ticky-tack calls going against us, as well. See: the Al Harris call in the 1st when he did what the rule book says to do-turn your head and play the ball. See also: the Tramon Williams call when he maintained his body position and simply slowed his speed- the receiver ran into him!! I thought the ball was uncatchable, to boot.

I think all defensive theories have relevance, which ultimately depend on your personal. As stated above I get the impression that the cover two is to make up for certain deficiencies in the secondary.
With all of that said it is a treat to watch harris and woodson line up each and every week. Best cb tandem in the league! Lest we not forget about Williams as well. That youngster has really benefited from learning under woody and harris. My personal thoughts are next time (and I know there will be a next time) Bigby goes down, woodson should move to safety and move williams into the starting cb role.

Wood and Al don't get by with extra holding and whatnot. That is a myth invented by Viking and Bears fans.

Do both. There is no reason that a CB cannot jam the crap out of a WR and still cover his zone.
