No. Favre's successor WAS a hole to fill. Without question. He had been feigning retirement for some time prior. The fact that Rodgers dropped in our laps was a giant stroke of good luck. He was mocked to go #4 to TB by Walter.
We had defensive needs at the time in our secondary. Walter had us mocked to pick CB R1, then to pick QB Charlie Frye R2. I saw Matt Cassel as our R1 pick in a Scout mock. So, word was out, and really, it was common knowledge that we needed a QB. Fave was entering his 14th season.
Not bustin' your balls QCHuskerFan, but that is the way it was then. I think nearly everyone thought, "well, OK..." when we went Rodgers. The pick made perfect sense. Favre had seemed invincible, but everyone knew his time was running out, and getting his replacement was imperative over those next two seasons.
Funny too, that those defensive needs were addressed with Ted's R2 pick of Nick Collins. What a draft!
Play, you are right, but few people saw it that way. Most people I talked with, articles and comments in the paper etc. didn't think much of the pick because Favre was still there. There were some exceptions. I thought we were pretty fortunate from the get go. As for need it was disappointing, but for long term it seemed to be great value and, of course, turned out to be.

The position that would piss me off the most would be WR, just imagine if we had Crabtree (who is starting to play like a beast) and Bryant( who plays like a beast when he wants) and throw in Jordy and Cobb. Lets see we draft Raji instead of Crabtree and The whale instead of Bryant hmmm so far so good TT.
Ok if you know me I will hate whatever pick Ted Thompson makes lol :)

If the Packers had drafted Michael Crabtree, Packers don't win or even get to Super Bowl XLV.

truth. Plus add to the equation everyone wanting to be paid starter's money. They can't put all of them out there at the same time every single play.

To my mind, the only way you spend a first rounder on a P or K is if they will "re-invent" the position. (E.g., Ray Guy).
[Come to think of it, the Packers did once spend a first rounder on a P who re-invented the position. Of course he was drafted as a running back, where he was arguably semi-bust. But as a punter he re-defined the position. Though I would have howled if they had picked a punter, even that one.]
Other than that, which I can't imagine someone like Ted Thompson ever even contemplating, what would piss me off more than anything would be picking something that is at the bottom of the need list. And that means, for me, *any* of the offensive skill positions other than TE.
QB, WR, RB...these are bad picks in the first for GB IMO.

And Packers probably don't draft Randall Cobb if they have Michael Crabtree. Crabtree just never made sense to draft during or in hindsight.

I could see taking Sebastian Janikowski with a first. But that's about it.
