Move Poppinga to DE (where he played in college) and start Chillar at SAM.

Thoughts?

It's not a bad idea, but I don't think we would gain anything from it. Poppinga is a strong, tough linebacker, but he would be an undersized DE. And we already have plenty of undersized DE's on the roster. We don't have any big guys to replace Jenkins.

I agree with Greg.

I'd much rather move Cole to RE, at least he has some body leverage he could use. If Harrell comes back and stays healthy, I could see him getting some snaps at RE also in run downs.

The problem is that Kampman and Jenkins are the only true DE's on the roster. We saw how Montgomery got pushed around by the Falcons' O-line, and KGB, Jason Hunter, and Jeremy Thompson are not stout enough either. The new guy they picked up is also a lightweight. We need a true DE in next year's draft.

Also, for the record, the last couple years I've been on the Jenkins bandwagon(I damn near created the thing) and now we're seeing, this team without him on it = ouchies.

It would make more sense to play more of a 3-4 alignment bringing Poppinga off teh edge etc. ala Bryce Paup of years gone by.

it's not quite as easy as just playing a 3-4. It's a completely different defense.
