Winning the division means that for most fans, their team beat out their most hated rivals. That absolutely holds value on an entertainment level, and that is why we watch entertainment. Outside of gambling the only real reason we have for being fans is pride.

Ask most NFL coaches what their goal is at the beginning of the season and they will say to win the division. Once that goal is accomplished the super bowl is next. Yes I understand wildcards, if winning divisions are so pointless then why have them at all? Or conferences for that matter. Because it adds to the entertainment value.

If you just take the top 6 teams, the Packers-Bears game would have been almost meaningless aside from some pride. Some of the NFC East games in the last week would have gone from play in games to pointless as well.

It creates drama but also provides an opportunity for inferior teams to get into the playoffs.

I think Big Willy sums my view up nicely.

The division championship is a brick

The ultimate goal is the Super Bowl (the wall) but the divisional championship is an important part of that wall.

Divisional rivalries are real to me. They add alot to my enjoyment of football as a whole. Much like fantasy football has brought the NFL to new heights of popularity by making games that would otherwise be "meaningless" important. So to do rivalries add that extra something. My personal fandom is based just as much on my hatred for the Bears and Vikings (and a lesser degree the Lions) as it is on my love of the packers.

As far as this comment if winning divisions are so pointless then why have them at all a lot of people ask that very same question and they are very serious about it.

Of course winning the division at 8-7-1 is better than being the Cardinals and left out of last year's playoffs, but I'd also much rather be 10-6 and in the playoffs as a W.C. than a 7-9 division winner. My argument pertains to the prestige of winning the division.

The 2010 season is my prime example. The Bears won the division - whoop de doooo. They can go hang a banner, have some rice crispy squares and juice boxes, maybe even get some gold star stickers to put on their desks and lockers for all I care. Meanwhile, I'll go admire the Lombardi trophy that the Packers won as a runner up in the division.

But most NFL fans know that their team isn't going to win the Super Bowl every season. If my team can't win the Super Bowl, I most certainly want to at LEAST be better than my division rivals. It's a hierarchy, for sure. There is nothing more important or meaningful in the NFL than being a champion, but since that's impossible every single season, I certainly want my favorite team to at least win the division. From there, I hope for them to at least win a playoff game or two. From there, the conference, etc. But from my perspective, winning the division is certainly more meaningful than not, even if it is less meaningful than winning the Super Bowl.

I do not like squandering a once in a lifetime quarterback. I read some of the previous, but not all. You do not squander a once in a lifetime quarterback, period. Being competitive is wasting that talent. You all have seen it. The man has spent a large percentage of his life on his back. This year? we have a line for him? MANY have blamed him. I personally haven't seen that. IMO the Packers should have prioritized a protection scheme for Rodgers, from the day he walked on the field as a starter.

IMO, given time, the man can throw it to Joe Blow from Outer Blow Maine college (pickup) if given(again) the little bit of time an NFL QB needs.

There seem to be a lot of good QB's coming along these days, but my paranoia is well-founded. I went 28 years in hell, with some highlights between great ones.

I want to win it all with this QB. Right Now. I do not think we did enough elsewhere to do so, but if that o line holds, anything is possible, imo

dfosterf (21-Apr) : One playbook to my knowledge. I was shooting for facetious.
beast (20-Apr) : I'm not sure they have different playbooks for different OL positions, and Dillard run blocking is supposedly worse than his pass blocking..
