The Packers finished their season with four defensive players who were older than 27 on their active roster and one member of that group said that the Packers might want to consider having more veterans on hand in the future. I've heard some talk about the Steelers defensive coordinator hates playing young players until they fully learn the defense saying it's a hard defense to learn as it's more complex and he likes when rookies ride the bench and get to learn from the vets for a couple of years.

And it's said Capers runs a defense that's very like the Steelers defense.

I call bull.

Some of the best defenders in the league are still in their rookie deals.

A player today is not what it once was, they are much more "NFL ready" coming out of college. It's just a matter of coaching them up.

And aside from Hyde, I'm pretty sure all the defenders with a significant amount of snaps were veterans.

Excuses.

One of the players over 27 (Bush) made the poor containment play on Kaepernick that led to the easy FG for the win last Sunday.

It is not said that Capers defense is like Steelers. It is fact that he and LeBeau together made the defense. LeBeau is just better.

Hayward looked pretty good last year.

Salary caps are a bitch eh? Anyway, I understand it is complex but I don't think that's the main issue. I think the main issue is the effectiveness of the front end. You get more pressure, you force quicker and hopefully worse decisions, and that tends to lead to more turnovers.

I understand trying to come out with explanations like this once the season is over and now that it is players feel more liberated to speak their mind.

This and what Nerdmann just said were exactly what I was thinking after reading the initial article. What he says is true to a point, but obviously even vets like Bush are making "rookie" mistakes.

We almost beat the 49ers with what almost amounted to a second string defense. I hope our top guys stay healthy next year!

It's not about mistakes but about making plays.

Against the 9ers our only great defensive play came from Tramon, and it's usually Tramon or Clay.

In 2010 we had Woodson, Collins, Tramon and Clay as playmakers... and now?

Agreed. You had players you could count on to step up.

I'd add Shields to the current list along with Clay and possibly Tramon or Daniels. Beyond that, it's hard to describe anyone on defense as better than serviceable.

Everyone bitches that we don't have any veteran leaders on this team and then when a player comes out and says playing with younger players is generally a liability everyone calls bullshit. Make up your minds.

Besides, when does a player become a veteran. 2 years, 3 years, more. Does it matter if he is a full time starter or a spot duty player?

The more you play the more experience you get and if you have great skills to go along with that experience you could be one of the great ones. If you have skills but not the brains to take advantage of the experience you may not go far. If you have all the experience in the world but your skills are limited you may not go far. You may stick around for a long time and be a decent role player but you probably won't excel.

Great skills can make up for lack of experience in the short term and vice versa but long term, the really good ones need both. Young guys, even those with great skills, don't have the experience and in most cases it will show up eventually in the form of a mistake. I think that is what Williams is saying. Obviously that does not mean the experienced ones don't make mistakes. Everyone does.

I also love it when people pick one guy and use him as an example as to why a premise is wrong. "My uncle smoked 3 packs a day and lived to be 100 years old. You can't tell me smoking is bad for you." Its the same way with football players. One young rookie has a decent year and all of a sudden the idea that younger players may not be as good, or maybe we should say consistent, as older players is hogwash.

Very little difference between the age and experience of the defense today, and the age and experience of the defense in 2010. If there is a leadership problem on the team it is the players that should be the leaders. Williams should be one of those leaders.

TheKanataThrilla (1h) : I guess I should have did a refresh when I walked away from the computer.
TheKanataThrilla (1h) : Peters is 25 with one year left on his contract at just over $3M
Zero2Cool (2h) : Mel Kiper sticks with Marcus Davenport to GB in 2nd mock
Zero2Cool (4h) : As for Marcus Peters, how old is he an what's his contract years left?
Zero2Cool (4h) : Packers got tired of Sitton's antics.
Zero2Cool (4h) : Sitton was released not because of play or salary, but personality. He will not be re-signed.
TheKanataThrilla (4h) : If we are planning on possibly cutting Cobb I can see the 2nd round pick. A second round pick for Peters is a pretty good deal.
Smokey (5h) : I'd offer Cobb + a 3rd round pick + a 6th round pick in 2019 for the CB Peters from KC.
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : I guess that is a highter round pick
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : Suggestion was a 2nd round pick. I would want a lower round pick. I think that is too much. A 3rd or 4th seems about right.
Smokey (6h) : Cobb and WHAT PICK ?
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : A suggestion I saw was a trade of Cobb and a Pick for Peters. I think that would be a great move.
Smokey (10h) : Sitton was drafted be GB in 2008, not a young man at this point, but still is a "bear" of a man.
Cheesey (17h) : Sitton? Maybe if the price is right.
Cheesey (17h) : I doubt the Packers would try to resign Sutton. But who knows? If the price is right?
Zero2Cool (20h) : Bears declining option on Josh Sitton. He'll be Free Agent.
