Yeah, it is all relative.

What I am looking forward to is seeing what Thornton does with exponentially better talent around him. He was on a very bad team. Now, Thornton will be seeing more one on one, more than he may have ever seen, and I would expect he could turn in some decent numbers.

That was a 2005 draft profile from SI on Collins. They would not augment it after the fact. Interesting he had a 3.21 grade. Turns into one of the best Pro Bowl Safeties in the NFL. I'm hoping Thornton can develop into a solid DT for the Packers, and become one of those real steals out of nowhere akin to Collins.

Man, it sure would be fun to somehow know where Ted could have gotten both players, had he not jumped R2 and R3... They only become steals or great picks if they overwhelmingly produce.

If he is more than just a guy to rotate in so the studs can rest, I'll be surprised. Man, would it be nice for him to be a stud, himself.

How do the ESPN talking heads gush over the picks when they were so far off the radar? Not to mention, nearly every other media outlet? IMO, they had other info we as fans were not privy to at the time. Could be respect earned by Ted over time, could also be these were in fact really sound picks at that point.

You may be happy if he is just a guy who holds down the position in rotation. I'm convinced they drafted him to be far more.

Which is why those folks that overreacted like drama queens at the selection of Thornton made me laugh. This pick reminded me of the Mike Neal pick, the difference is that Thornton is a legitimate big man, whereas Mike Neal is a beefed up smaller guy. Whether Neal can ever truly play OLB remains to be seen, but that is another discussion.

That is an excellent point about Mike Neal. Perhaps his less than large frame is reason for his multiple injuries?

Has anyone watched Thornton's highlight reel on YouTube? I know, I know it's broadcast TV, or is it? 🙂 In any case, I was wholly unimpressed with his highlight reel. Most of the time when he's penetrating he's completely out of the play. I guess that's instinct that he doesn't have.

We've talked about highlight reels and how all of them make a player look good. I thought this one was the exception. After watching it, I was even more baffled at the selection. Ted Thompson said Thornton just kind of kept jumping off the tape and he caught their eye. I'd like to see the tape he's referring to.

Hoping he's half as good as that other guy we had here for awhile from S. Miss.

He played NT for one of the worst teams in college football, he's not going to have flashy highlights. The things to look for is if he's beating the man across from him or moving them into the backfield or holding up against double teams or seeing how he does when he's not double teamed. What I like from him is he looks really quick off the ball and when he punches guys with his hands it's violent and jolts them.

I think Thornton is going to be what they wanted out of Worthy. This is one of my favorite draft classes which sucks because probably at least 2 or 3 of these guys won't ever do anything which is just how it goes. I wouldn't be surprised if Thornton ended up being one of those guys but he looks like he has all the tools to be a good player.

Yeah. Wow. What was Thompson thinking?

And, I cannot imagine a more clear display of a lack of instincts than this INT:

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8414362

Nothing to see here...

Or here...

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7387311

Granted, this is indeed very limited, but I don't know how you can claim he lacks instincts from any single play in any one of these uffda.

Now, here you can find 4 complete game highlights:
http://www.draftnikcentral.com/draft-prospects/player-profile/videos.cfm?id=2176

These are slower developing because they are complete game films, but still show what we got as a player, and what he was surrounded with playing at So. Miss. I still see instincts. Just because the opposition runs a play away from a player doesn't mean he was "completely swept out of the play." Did he get caught over pursuing? Sure, they are complete game films. But, this is the boatload of tape available to us fans. He looks pretty instinctual if you ask me. Especially the NFLPA, Arkansas and LA Tech games.

I'll have to find the clip someone posted earlier...it was very weak. Very weak. I remember you loving it, though. That's a shocker. 🙂

The ESPN babble heads sure loved the pick:

Yeah, please do find the clip someone posted earlier that was very weak....

What a fucking load of BS. I mean, really. It is pretty disingenuous to point to a few plays where he might have over pursued and say it was a wasted pick. A "bust." I wanted DuQuan Jones. Played for Penn State. At the same time, his stat line was actually pretty unimpressive, and that gave me some concerns. I'm sure there are plenty of warts on his game tape...

I've posted all the Thornton game film I could find in an attempt to maybe see what Ted saw in him to go up and take him in R3. OK, he brings some energy and some size, speed, ability to play all along that DL, some different moves in swim and bull rushing, some instincts. I was as surprised as you at the Thornton selection, but I guess I can now see why they did it, what their rationale might have been. Ted went out on a limb with this pick, from a fan's perspective, but maybe not from his own.

Was it a reach? Maybe. Maybe not.
