Most Valuable means to me you would trade them for nobody. Houston would trade Watt for Rodgers and Andrew Luck in a heartbeat I am positive. Does it suck that it means this is a QB award? Yes. I like how the CFL handles this award as it uses the term "Most Outstanding Player", which although still means the QB wins it the majority of the time, it leaves room for others.

A few blanket statements aren't exactly convincing, if you ask me.

It's easy to say Aaron Rodgers around here because no one wants to hear another QB might be having a better season than him. I mean, he is Aaron Rodgers, no one could be doing better than him! I get it, I truly get it, but J.J. Watt deserves the award more than Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo.

As for the argument saying QB is most important to the team, then admit the award is garbage as it is the Most Valuable Quarterback award. Will Watt get it? No, and that's the problem. We as fans can be blind or we can objective.

Who will get it? Some QB.
Who most deserves it? J.J. Watt.

Don't get mistaken, I would take Aaron Rodgers over any other NFL player. But those not understanding what Watt is doing this past season are really missing out on something incredible.

Someone mentioned why three awards.
Most Valuable Player
Best Offensive Player
Best Defensive Player

or whatever those are. That's a great question and something that has had me puzzled for years. How can you be the MVP of the league, but not the best player on the side of ball you play? Has the MVP ever won the Off/Def award too?

The Packers still made the playoffs when Aaron Rodgers missed what was it 8 games? Make excuses for the division all you want, but if playoffs are the factor, then stop being obtuse.

J.J. Watt deserves the award.

The rules dictate QB is head an shoulders above being most valuable to a team. Next position is probably OL or DL and it is a distant second.

To have a defensive lineman even in consideration for the award tells you everything you need to know.

Again, J.J. Watt deserves the award.

It's ok to think watt deserves it but don't try to act like this team can win without Rodgers

I think Zero has seen the light.. the QB position is overvalued as a general statement. [grin1]

MVP is not an award for the "best" player, it is for the most valuable player on their team. One can make an argument from a handful of guys at the top deserving of the award, but it is ultimately subjective.

There are a number of players this season that are deserving (from the top of my head):

JJ Watt
Justin Houston
Aaron Rodgers
Tom Brady
DeMarco Murray (yes over Romo, he drives that bus moreso than Romo)
Bobby Wagner (that defense wasn't the same without him)
I am sure there are others I am overlooking...

The writers have this addiction to the QB position, much like college football continues to spin the SEC as the only power conference. Or the Heisman has become an QB award only.

Honestly, if I had a vote it probably would be split. And if you are sold on JJ Watt being part of the MVP, then you certainly have to give Justin Houston just as much credit, sans the receiving elements. Or look at the impact of Wagner not being a part of the Seahawks defense.. it is telling.

Most valuable player... I would have a hard time not including Watt in the award.. but so would I with the overlooks of Houston and to a lesser extent Wagner.

Again.. it is a completely subjective award in the end. Overrated as overvaluing a single position on a football team.

Romo is playing well, but I think Murray is a big reason why. The guy takes alot of pressure off the passing game.
That is how I hope, starting now, that Lacy can do for Rodgers.
Lacy hasn't been ridden as much as Murray has been.
This would be a great time to unleash Lacy on unsuspecting opponents!

Look at how the careers of Greg Jennings and James Jones have gone. Without Aaron Rodgers throwing passes to them, they have become so-so WR's.
Rodgers can take slightly above average talents, and make them great.
To me, that shows MVP talent.

Honestly, if the packers traded rodgers to the Texans for Watt any rational person would predict the Texans make the playoffs, while the packers would probably playing at a panthers type level or worse. It's not even close remotely close. In fact the packers would have a better chance of making the post season with romo as opposed to Watt. There's just so much that goes into QB position.

Without Rodgers the Packers are 8-8 at best.
Watt probably doesn't affect the Texans record more than 1 or 2 games..
Brady is probably the only other player that would effect his teams performance as much as Rodgers, maybe more so.

I hope it doesn't come down to a split. The Year Favre shared it with Sanders it was only because the voting was over before the last game of the season. The votes were in for the tie and Sanders went over 2000 yards the last week. I'm convinced at least one Favre voter or someone who voted for another player would have shifted his vote for Sanders had they voted after the last game.

As far as the Watt/Rodgers debate as much as I would like to see Aaron get it I think I would have to vote for Watt but I can certainly see arguments for both. In a way, if you vote for Watt because what he is doing as a defensive player is such a rare accomplishment then you should have supported Keenan Allen for ROY last year because what he did as a rookie WR was much more of an accomplishment than what Eddie Lacy did as a Rookie RB.( Side note OBJ is a shoe in for ROY this year and it should be unanimous given that linemen never get it)

Still, I don't think you can deny that the Packers would be worse off without Rodgers than the Texans would be without Watt so there is that. Then again I think there are several players who, if you took them away, their teams would be worse off than the Texans without Watt (Luck and the Colts, Gronk or Brady and the Pats, Rivers and the Chargers)

Before I would make my decision though I would like to see an actual ballot and how it is worded. Does it say "which player is the most valuable to his team" in that case I would go with Rodgers. If it is which player is most valuable to the league (it is the league MVP after all not team MVP) then I would vote for Watt.

Either way the MVP will have a Wisconsin tie this year unless Rodgers and Watt cancel each other out and someone else sneaks in.

I couldn't vote for Murray because as great as his year has been he has Romo and I also don't think he is any more valuable to the cowboys then Bell is to the Steelers (I also don't think Murray's season was that much better than Bell's if you consider their averages.) The reason Bell is isn't on my radar either is because of Big Ben.
