Rookies entering the league have been handcuffed by the recent labor agreement

NFL rookie contracts have changed how agents do business with players

In short, Ted doesn't even have to try and lowball anybody because the NFL rookie wage system already does this for him.

Well as the CBA already lowballs rookies, why does Ted Thompson not pick the best (DB"s) players available instead of players from colleges competing with less than the best programs ?
Ted Thompson claims that he picks the best available players when he drafts, but I am far from convinced. Withholding money by not being willing to get good FA to fill needs, IMO, saves nothing. In addition, as stockholders don't receive any dividends, what is Ted spending that money on, his bank account ?

Rollins stands a strong chance of becoming a star player; Randall possibly even more so, and where do you get the idea he came from a low quality school - Arizona or A.S.U., which is it? For that matter, most of Ted's recent first and second rounders have been from major colleges.

Ted Thompson doesn't withhold the teams money he spends it on players that are on the team. He signed the top WR and top RT in FA this last offseason (also held on to Peppers despite a large pay boost this year), the fact that they were in GB the previous year doesn't magically mean that money wasn't spent.

Players from quality schools like Florida State, Oregon, Ohio State, or Michigan demand more money and Ted Thompson knows it.

Whoever was drafted at #62 overall was getting a $981,864 singing bonus and a base salary of $435,000. It has absolutely nothing to do with where they went to school.

Whoever told you that was trying to spin you up, and having some fun at your expense. They got you to make a fool of yourself in those post-draft threads. No need to continue being misinformed. [cheers]

TT's GM role for the Packers began in 2005. He was born Jan. 17, 1953 in Atlanta, Texas. He grew up in Texas and attended SMU. He was an undrafted free agent for the Houston Oilers where he started in 8 games between 1975 to 1984 at LB. He served as a scout for Seattle before coming to GB. These are some of the draft picks he has made sense he became the Packer GM in 2005.

2005 - round 2 - 51st pick - Nick Collins - DB - Bethune-Cookman
2005 - round 7 - 245th pick - Kurt Campbell - DB - Albany (NY)
2006 - round 5 - 148th pick - Ingle Martin - QB - Furman
2010 - round 7 - 230th pick - C.J.Wilson - DE - East Carolina
2011 - round 6 - 179th pick - Caleb Schlauderaff - OL - Southern Utah
2011 - round 6 - 186 th pick - D.J.Smith - LB - Applachian State
2012 - round 4 - 132nd pick - Jerron McMillon - SS - Maine
2012 - round 7 - 243rd pick - B.J,Coleman - QB - Tenn-Chattanooga
2013 - round 7 - 216th pick - Charles Johnson - WR - Grand Valley State
2014 - round 7 - 236th pick - Jeff Janis - WR - Sagina Vally State
2015 - round 2 - 62nd pick - Quinten Rollins - DB - Miami (Ohio)

Only 1 of this list of 11 picks have paid off for the Packers, Nick Collins. The last 2 are still in question. The remaining picks never proved to be worth picking. All of these players came from, IMO, less than nationally competitive schools. 72% were comparative failures and poor draft picks.
Ted Thompson has a propensity for picking unknown players from week colleges that serve as easy wins for larger schools to pad their records upon. Yes it is possible to find a good player from such a college, as Nick Collins is an example, but they are very rare and wasting any opportunity to pick players from the best quality programs is poor management.

As Ted Thompson is a product from Texas, it is all to clear where he developed his football philosophy. Most things from there generally bullshit or have an over inflated opinion of itself.

I'm not sure what year it was, but when the NCAA. Capped the number of scholarships at 85, that is when players from smaller colleges started being drafted more.

That is also why every year there seems to be a few upsets by the small guys over the big guys
Look no further than The MACC.
Not so long ago The Big Ten teams would
Load up on MACC teams early in the year , using them as warm up games.
Now those games are very competitive.

This is what Tedd and his scouts do so well, find the gems.

Smokey had a whole list of players that did not make it, I am betting there are just as many who were late round picks and UDFA's that did make it.

Way too soon to know about guys like Rollins and Janis (as much as I'm tired of hearing about him, he does possess the tools; his ceiling is another matter that doesn't need to be rehashed here). The only we know that was a definite reach was McMillian.

And if you're going to lump Rollins into your list who came from a MAC school, you need to include Greg Jennings, Lang Starks and Sitton on your list. In fact, you're not entirely clear on what is a "week" college is. A quick look over the drafts shows plenty of guys from DI schools like San Diego St, New Mexico, Boise St etc that are not from traditional power conferences/football factories that you want players to be drafted from. Even a lot of the picks from big conferences came from schools that are inconsistent (Nelson from K-State, Quarless from Penn St) or considered bottom tier in conference (Cobb from Kentucky, Bahktiari from Colorado).

The big football factory schools like Ohio St, Alabama, etc only put out 8-9 picks a year out of 256 total picks for the draft and that's not even getting into retained players from the previous year or the position the players play. You'd have to draft one of their players every round for a decade to get a full 53 man roster and have every position covered. In short, it's not possible to construct an NFL roster solely from a half dozen of teams like Ohio St, Florida St or Michigan (I'm not sure why you included them in your list since they've been a dumpster fire the past decade; Michigan St and Iowa have been more successful). And that's not even getting into draft busts from big schools. Is wasn't long ago you didn't pick a RB from Penn St or a QB from California because it was thought they were system players who thrived against "week" opponents. Half the reason Lacy lasted like he did is because many thought Alabama RBs were made by their oline.

I can only imagine what your reaction would be if this were 1991 and GB drafted Favre in the 2nd round from Southern Mississippi.

Last but not least, who should GB have drafted instead of the players you listed above?

Zero2Cool (18h) : I hope they take a Punter at 9th overall. Be bold!
Mucky Tundra (19h) : I may end up eating those words but I think they need a lot more talent then their 4 picks can provide

Mucky Tundra (19h) : The Chicago Bears are very open for business at 9 and telling teams they are ready to move for the right price, per source

Mucky Tundra (23-Apr) : is Aiyuk worth a 1st rounder?
Zero2Cool (23-Apr) : 49ers are seeking a 1st round pick in exchange for WR Brandon Aiyuk
Mucky Tundra (22-Apr) : Based on Gutes comments, now I don't feel as silly having 13 picks in my mock the other day
Zero2Cool (22-Apr) : Zach Wilson to Broncos.
Zero2Cool (22-Apr) : Gutekunst says he'd love to have 13 or 14 picks. He's trading back huh lol
beast (22-Apr) : Someday we'll have a draft betting scandal
beast (21-Apr) : Sometimes looking extremely amazing, sometimes looking extremely lost
beast (21-Apr) : I haven't looked into the QBs, but some have suggested Maye has some of the most extremely inconsistent tape they've seen
beast (21-Apr) : Well it also sounds like Patriots are listening to trade offers, not that seriously considering any, but listening means they aren't locked
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Maye needs to be AFC
Mucky Tundra (21-Apr) : Not liking the idea of the Vikings getting Maye
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Vikings HC joked that he may or may not have sent flowers to Bob Kraft. That's where rumor came from.
beast (21-Apr) : Can't tell if this is real or BS, but some rumors about a possible Patriots/Vikings trade for #3 overall
dfosterf (21-Apr) : One playbook to my knowledge. I was shooting for facetious.
beast (20-Apr) : I'm not sure they have different playbooks for different OL positions, and Dillard run blocking is supposedly worse than his pass blocking..
dfosterf (19-Apr) : The only problem with that is he isn't a guard either.
dfosterf (19-Apr) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Kidding aside, I hope the best for him.
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Went to a Titans board. One comment there. Not very long. I quote: "LOL" They don't sound overly upset about our aquisition.
beast (18-Apr) : OT Dillard has been absolutely horrible... like OG Newman levels
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Suit him up and have him stand in front of the big board as a draft day cautionary tale.
