I wonder do the Packers possibly incorporate a 3-4 package that they routinely use if Hawk plays well in the middle?

Chillar had a great game, his blitzing was tremendous vs. the Bears. He got hits on the QB, caused disruptions, and at one time stopped his blitz and redirected towards the RB to tackle the RB for a loss on a pass out of the backfield.

Popp has been a bit of a disappointment, but I would tend to think his days at a DE would be beneficial in using him as a pass rusher. Plus he's solid against the run.

Hawk and Barnett are terrific, can't say much about them.

The interesting player may be Desmond Bishop. I think he hits like a truck, might be an intriguing player to have as a pass rushing specialist, or even a run defender.

I for one would like to see a 3-4 package that is routinely used, just to add some spice to our D, and perhaps even take our blitzing to the next level (I think it's much easier to create and execute blitzes in a 3-4 than 4-3).

no. our defense is not geared toward a 3-4. Kampman isn't big enough to play end and too big for LB. In fact, Cullen Jenkins would be the only d-end that might fit the scheme. Our d-tacks are all wrong; Pickett is the only one that would fit. Hawk is too big. just not right for this team.

p.s. I'm hoping, as I have been, that Barnett's injury is a blessing in disguise for the this team, for now and the future. I have always thought of Hawk as a MLB. Chillar has been excellent. If we go to base D, I think Chillar fills teh Will and Popp in the Sam. If Popp doesn't get the job done, Chillar can play Sam and give Bishop a shot at Willl

Jenkins as one end, along side Harrell. Harrell has been getting a lot of snaps at DT in pass situations, makes me think he has some ability the coaches see to get a rush / tip the ball.

Jolly might have something to offer as a NT. Or perhaps we can draft a d-linemen more suited for the NT position in a 3-4.

I like the idea because it'd allow us to utilize one of our most talented groups: LB. From your point of view Bozz, I can see making it a regular thing might be asking too much, but how about in terms of an occasional thing?

When the chips are down some players step up.

Hawk is one such player.

I never doubted him.

It's not that Hawk was great, it's that Barnett wasn't very good this season. With Hawk, you had a linebacker who didn't over pursue and held his own. You had a backer that actually wrapped up instead of going for the big hit. Barnett would over pursue and go for the big hit instead of wrapping up. He was playing way to aggressive for whatever reason.

Hawk was vice versa.

"all_about_da_packers" wrote:

I have to disagree a little with you porky, I think in Barnett's earlier years he did over pursue, but this year he wasn't aggressive.

Instead of running into the hole to meet the RB like he did so much of last year, this year Barnett waited for the RB to get in the hole and come to him.

I think the lack of aggressiveness vividly stood out in the Atlanta game, where a RB (Turner, I think) had Barnett solo on the outside, and Turner was shaking and trying to get Barnett to bite. Barnett just stood there, stayed back and waited for Turner to pick the direction and start running towards him.

On NFL Replay they showed last year's match-up against the Chargers in week 3. LT had Barnett in a similar position (outside, solo) and was trying to do what Turner did, shaking to try and get Barnett to bite. As LT started to shake, Barnett just flat out attacked him, and got LT for a minimal gain.

Perhaps it's as simple as Barnett thinking he was backed up on the LT play, and not on the Turner play, which led to the hesitation. But that's sort of the difference between this year and last year, Barnett seemed to lack the aggressive instinct of going after the player, instead chosing to meet him as he came out of the gap.

Hawk was, even in the Nickle LB package, far more aggressive in attacking the line of scrimmage. He over pursued at times too (Z captured one such moment in his highlight video), but it was nice to see that aggressiveness again.

Although I have to say that IMO the past couple of weeks Barnett was returning to that aggressive style of the previous year.

I think you can pick plays out of every single game and say well he did good job on that one play. The Turner play is an example of that. Turner actually made his best runs on the cutbacks in that game. Marion Barber and Adrian Peterson too.

The Packers run defense does a good job on 20 of 22 running plays a game, but on the other two plays they give up the big run. That's the problem with Nick Barnett and quite a few other players. Barnett is not consistent enough to hold his ground an entire game. People say that well it's just a couple of plays a game. However, that's what you need to do as the running game is pretty much designed to chip away and then hit the big run or two late in the game. To be fair it's not just Barnett who is playing poorly. I feel Ryan Pickett has been up and down this year too. A.J. Hawk has been hurt too. Last year, Nick Barnett could get away with over pursuing at times because other guys were stepping up. This year, that's not the case. So it's not entirely his fault that the run defense is struggling. I don't want to give the impression that I blame him or anything, but when he consistently does the same thing week in and week out, it's a cause for concern.

Another problem is when he goes for the big hit. He tries to tackle high instead of using the proper technique. Atari Bigby does it too. That leads to players like Marion Barber overpowering them.

Barnett is a good player, but this year he's clearly struggled. The fact that he flies around leads me to believe that he might be better off at the weakside backer where as A.J. Hawk because of his big body might be better in the middle. I rather have a big guy who can hold his own in the middle instead of a thiner guy who gets pushed back. That's why I think Hawk on the inside is really not only something to look at for this season, but if he plays well, it might be something they stay with.
