Hell yes if you can get Sammy Watkins for 1-2mil a year then sign him.
I'm betting Sammy would be looking for another agent real quick.😁

The point is everyone is trying to give reasons for letting Jordy go.

I say that would be THE BIGGEST mistake Gutekunst could do.

You don't dump your Qb's favorite receiver to save a few million dollars.

Contracts these days are all about the guaranteed money.

Jordy, Randall, Clay and the rest fully know when they sign there's a good chance they will be restructuring by the final year.

Every receiver on The Packer roster learns to play every wr position.

That's why it takes awhile for the young guys to break into the lineup.

What is the chance that a guy like Watkins could come to Green Bay and step right in?

Jordy may have lost a step, (everyone does), his value on the field and in the lockeroom is much more important.

Extend Jordy for 3 years, convert the 12mil owed to a signing bonus.
Put his base salary at 1mil a year.
Add bonus incentives.

Now you are looking at having Jordy Nelson for the next 4 years at 4mil a year (cap hit)plus any bonus money achieved.
That is very doable.

Cobb is in same situation.
Both seem to be pretty intelligent guys.
The will get there 12mil signing bonus up front.
Pretty sure they could invest that money and make up for any lost revenue the next 3 years.

The first item on the agenda, IMHO, is to get an extension done with Aaron so they know just how much they have to spend.

Really? What are the obvious stats that show Nelson is in a decline while having a half decent QB throwing to him...

That might say something about Rodgers' familiarity inflating Nelson's stats. Davante caught balls for 543 yards in that stretch with Hundley, with Cobb netting 351 yards. For a young guy, who hasn't built a repetoire with any receiver, you'd think he'd like to go to the main man in Nelson. That's generally what young and back-up QBs do.

And this is not a common problem. When Brady went down, Cassel kept on targeting Welker and Moss. When Big Ben went down, Vick and Jones targeted Antonio Brown for just about half of their total yards that season.

Nelson best season was 2014 where he played 16 games, got 98 catches for 1,519 yards... which is an average of 6.125 catches per game and 94.9375 yards per game.

In 2015, Nelson had an ACL injury which is said to normally take more than a full year to recover from... and so Nelson started 2016 off slow as he was still recovering and knocking off the rust.

In the last 10 games of 2016, Nelson got 70 catches for 936 yards... which is an average of 7 catches for 93.6 yards per game... a whopping 1.3375 yards less per game than his career best.

That's certainly impressive. Didn't say a thing about him never being a good player. When the 2018 season starts, though, that's two seasons ago.

Now in 2017... suddenly Nelson gets knocked out of the Falcons game, the whole offenses struggles against the Seahawks, Bengals and Vikings... and suddenly Nelson is done because Hundley can't get him the ball?

Didn't Nelson go out on the first possesion after catching zero passes? Don't know how you put offensive struggles on Nelson there.

I also never said the offense would be better off with a guy like Allison at WR instead of Nelson. It's just that there's better receivers out there for the money he's getting at his age. I really want to make it clear that I don't hate Nelson as a player at all. He was pretty darn good in his prime. It's just that both on the eye test and looking at his statistics he's lost a step. And that won't get any better, looking at both his age and the averages for wide receivers. Combine that with the fact that we're paying both him and Cobb roughly the same as Julio Jones and T.Y. Hilton and it just looks to me that this isn't a very good situation to be in, let alone extending him.

He's a guy who's had injury issues and just didn't get up to speed in that Rams offense, so I can't imagine him getting more than that.

You do if they're not performing up to their contract. I can't imagine Gutekunst having the balls to cut both Nelson and Cobb, though.

There's rookie QBs playing left and right who have to know every route, timing and playbook by heart and call the plays on the field. I'd hope a wide receiver could get up to speed during the off-season and pre-season. I've never seen a free agent wide receiver who sat out the first few games or only ran fly routes for his new team. I can imagine familiarity and practice makes perfect, but it'd be crazy if we'd have to give every receiver a year to get accustomed to our offense.

So you agree that he's declining and losing a step, but you want to extend him by 3 years for veteran leadership and familiarity alone? The Patriots go to the Super Bowl every 3rd year with Brady and Bill being the only consistent parts there.

I agree that veteran influence has its place in a locker room and on the field. Just look at Charles Woodson. Thing is, we let Woodson go when he was nearly done. That was a painful move from a fan's perspective, but in hindsight, it was the right move to make.

At least we do agree on that point. Getting Burnett back and signing Rodgers to an extention might be our nr. 1 priorities right now.

We have to stop creating straw arguments.
I think everyone would like to have Jordy around next year, but not at the current price. The only questions are how much and for how long.
I feel the same way about Randall Cobb.

The is there is simply too much money tied up in the position relative to the level of talent on the field....especially with other glaring needs.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, I still believe MM need to do blend in more picks, rubs, crossing patterns et. al., more "schemeing" to get all of our receivers open.

When I was in Green Bay for the holidays the rumour was Jordy was considering retiring. I think the Packers work out a deal with him and he plays a couple more years but I think both sides realize there's something wrong here. Age/injuries catch everyone eventually there's no shame in it, but the Packers would be smart to invest in another young talent to replace Nelson/Cobb in the near future.
