A good Read from NFP

NFC Championship Memories

As we prepare to watch the conference championship games on Sunday a true football fans delight before the seemingly endless bye week and stream of inane media preceding the Super Bowl I think back to a year ago when I was with the Packers.

We had raced past the Seahawks in the divisional round in the midst of a snowstorm and surprisingly mild mid-January temperatures. With the snow falling, the game out of hand and a trip the NFC championship game assured, I went down to the sideline, something I did only a couple times in nine years since its no place for front office personnel to celebrate. The scene was one I will always remember: snow coming down in thick flakes, the game won, players and coaches hugging and squeezing the breath out of me and, of course, players asking about their contracts Corey Williams wondering about his and Donald Driver asking about a bonus he missed.

As we settled in that night and watched the Steelers lose to the Jaguars, we all expected to be making a trip to Dallas the next week. We felt certain the Cowboys would beat the Giants, who were coming off an emotional game against the Patriots to end the season and had beaten Tampa in a road game. It would be our second trip to Dallas in two months, having lost there at the end of November in a game in which Brett Favre was hurt. We tentatively arranged our itinerary for Dallas.

Not so fast. The Giants beat the Cowboys, and as fate would have it, they were coming to Green Bay for the NFC championship. We were excited, but we knew two things: the Giants were on a roll, and the forecast for the game was subzero temperatures. Not subzero including wind chill; subzero before factoring in wind chill! Once this was known, it became one of the huge storylines of the game, and rightfully so.

On game day, the weather was beyond bone-chilling. I thought our game a few weeks earlier in Chicago was the coldest I had ever experienced. Not any longer. This set a new standard for frigid. Yes, I was lucky to be in a private box for the game, but I did have to be on the field for a while before it started.

I had the privilege of hosting a couple of interesting guests that day. Richard Lovett is the president of CAA, the mega-firm that represents the elite in entertainment and sports. He is a good friend and a diehard Packers fan from Milwaukee. Richard and his friends were there, bundled in multiple layers to fight the cold.

A client of CAA who is also a huge Packers fan was also there. Comedian Rob Schneider of SNL and Adam Sandler-movie fame also braved the cold and rooted for his Packers.

The most interesting guest whom I was fortunate to host that day was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, John Roberts, Jr. Justice Roberts and his group, including his seven-year-old son, were accompanied by U.S. Marshals, who made his visit seamless, as they were amazingly inconspicuous and virtually invisible. I gave Justice Roberts and his group a tour and talk before the game and introduced him to a couple of players, hoping that, even if they did not know who he was, they would not say anything inappropriate.

Then, of course, there was the game. The Giants continued their roll and we were fortunate to take it to overtime. Lawrence Tynes missed two field goals that would have won the game for the Giants in regulation; on the second attempt, I packed up my belongings and was ready to head down from the box to start the off-season. Miraculously, he missed again and there were hugs all around. The upsurge in optimism continued when we won the toss to start with the ball in overtime.

As we know, the Giants won soon after. The deflation after Corey Websters interception is hard to describe, with a hushed crowd sensing the end. Now we could only hope for a hat trick from Tynes, but we knew it was unlikely. Tynes trotted on the field, and for the first and only time in my years of watching football, I couldnt look. I kept my head in my hands and just listened. Silence.

While a trip to the Super Bowl in Arizona was so close, it was not to be. One thing that everyone who works in the NFL learns to appreciate is how fleeting the chances are to capture the ultimate prize. We were very close in 2004 in Philadelphia, and we were closer last year at Lambeau. Those chances are so few, so rare and so important to savor and seize. They may never happen again.

The Giants continued their run. Thats what the post-season appears to be about now, getting hot at the right time (see Eagles, Philadelphia) and upset the Patriots in a dramatic Super Bowl. I left the Packers the following week and watched the Super Bowl broadcast in Spanish in Mexico (Pase a Tyree; muy bueno!).

Enjoy the games. Ill have my memories from a year ago. Although bitter cold and with a disappointing finish, it was an experience to remember.

Please tell me Roberts was rooting for the Packers. He's my favorite current Justice. Would suck if he rooted for the Giants that day.

Great article, thanks for the post RP.

I'm a bit surprised that Brandt says we were fortunate to force OT. Other than that, the article has some powerful stuff.

I think more than a couple of people were in the same boat: couldn't bare to watch Tynes kick the OT FG.

That almost hurt to read. I tailgated for 3 hours before the game, sat in the south endzone, had to eat my frozen beer, and then watch them lose it in overtime. So freaking close

Brett Favre's last pass at Lambeau Field... and I had come up in the lottery for Superbowl tickets...

It's a playoff year I want to forget. :Insert emoticon hanging in noose:

Thanks for ruining my day RP (just kidding - kind of). It's almost as cold in Toronto today as it was in Green Bay that day. I remember not sleeping the night before, getting up to work out in the morning and heading over to take my customary walk around Lambeau Field that I do before each game. I actually almost turned back it was so cold, but I did it anyway because it's my tradition. Tailgated with my wife for 3 hours before the game and headed to the stadium. Had to stand sideways in the bleachers because evryone was so bundled up. Beer freezing within minutes of it being poured (lucky for me that's all it takes to drink one).

When we didn't recover that fumble I just about lost it and then when Brett threw the INT, I was sure we were done for. Seeing Tynes run out for the 47 yard FG I was wondering what the hell Coughlin was doing and thought we'd have great field position. When it went through I just felt empty inside. Not sad, not angry, just nothing. Took a long time to get over that loss and seeing the Giants celebrate on our field.

I still have a hard time with losing that game and I had to force myself to open this thread.
Now I wish I hadn't.

Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : Saints have agreed to terms on a contract with former Packers wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown.
beast (12-Apr) : No, but of it's for legislation, then half of the country will find it evil, not good, whatever it says....
Mucky Tundra (12-Apr) : Draft is still 2 weeks away. UGH
dhazer (11-Apr) : Does anyone know of a good AI generator to create letters of Support for legislation?
Zero2Cool (11-Apr) : Gordon "Red" Batty retires as equipment manager
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Sounds like that's pretty certain now.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Packers "at" Eagles in Brazil. Week One

Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Christian Watson got married. Wife better be careful with those hamstrings!! 😂😂
dfosterf (9-Apr) : Those poor bastards
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Falcons have signed former Packers CB Kevin King, who has been out of football since 2021.
dfosterf (8-Apr) : Collectively, we need to spend more time in what we have, when analyzing ostendible needs and historical proclivities
dfosterf (8-Apr) : I say he is better than so many of these draft picks
dfosterf (8-Apr) : Question of the week for me: Has anyone besides me done any deep dive into the potential of Alex McGough, our 3rd string qb?
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Or in Tunsil's case, something gets released day of draft or day before lol
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Seems every year someone does something pre-draft.
dfosterf (8-Apr) : Falling down drunk. The draft board
dfosterf (8-Apr) : Allright! Potential character guy/f#×k up pickup in D'Vondre Sweat!
Zero2Cool (7-Apr) : Go Badgers!!!
Martha Careful (6-Apr) : Go Boilermakers!!!
Martha Careful (5-Apr) : Diggs has not stepped up in the playoffs and has a high cost
beast (5-Apr) : Probably not going to let Diggs walk away unless he's horrible... but according to reports he also might not be as good as he used to be.
beast (5-Apr) : The 25th pick in the draft has been an offensive player since 2017, 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB, 1 OC
Mucky Tundra (5-Apr) : Odd, why give up a 2025 2nd Rounder for him if you're just gonna let him walk?
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : Texans to let Diggs be free agent in '25
buckeyepackfan (4-Apr) : 49r's aign RB Patrick Taylor.
Martha Careful (4-Apr) : Reversion to the mean would indicate we will keep it
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : It's also been utilized in a trade in 14 of the past 20 years
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : The 25th pick in the draft hasn't been made by it's original holder since 2016.
Mucky Tundra (4-Apr) : Gotta imagine that Green Bay vs Houston will be a primetime game this upcoming season
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : No. Kill QB. No worries. 😁
Mucky Tundra (3-Apr) : Diggs, Collins, Dell and Schultz is gonna be tough to cover
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : Stefon Diggs' trade will not be processed as a post-June 1 designation, so that is just over $31 million in dead cap this year.
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : Bills trading WR Stefon Diggs to the Texans in exchange for a 2025 2nd-round pick. (via @rapsheet)
beast (3-Apr) : Using Patterson as RB and RB/WR tweener... so I think they also signed Patterson as a 3rd down RB, not just a kick returner as articles are
beast (3-Apr) : I think PFT missed the real Steelers/Patterson connection, Steelers new OC Arthur Smith has been Patterson's head coach the last 3 years
wpr (2-Apr) : It has Martha. I was stunned when I was in HS to learn Iowa was still playing half court BB in the 70's.
Martha Careful (2-Apr) : Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese...women's sports has come a long way. GREAT TO SEE!!
Martha Careful (31-Mar) : Happy Easter everyone. I hope you all have a great day.
dfosterf (28-Mar) : Maybe
Mucky Tundra (28-Mar) : Yes
Zero2Cool (28-Mar) : No.
Mucky Tundra (28-Mar) : End of a Degu-era
dhazer (28-Mar) : Steelers sign Patterson because of new kickoff rule interesting
Zero2Cool (28-Mar) : Former #Packers TE Josiah Deguara is signing a 1-year deal with the Jaguars, per source.
Zero2Cool (28-Mar) : They do not do it for "content sake".
dfosterf (28-Mar) : For the record, I enjoy Beast and Mucky drafts
