Two people come to mind if we stick with the 9.

Orakpo and Maualuga.

A lot of guys I'd be happy with, and it's hard to say when 8 teams will pick ahead of us, but I'm thinking the game is to nail down just one guy.

So, if I was forced to bet my life on it, I'd go with Orakpo.

He's the guy I least want out of who will likely be available, hence he will be the one chosen. That's just the way me and betting get along...

If your not looking for 1st round offensive skill players or QB's... this is an excellent draft..

It is deep as the ocean blue at a few positions..

BTW... I am saying 9 and Jerry because I think he is going to be moving up boards.. call it a hunch.. a few of the places I have been looking is 10 to 20 rated before Senior Bowl and Combine.. we shall see.

Jerry has had a nice week, but he was always a first round talent and I think he's caught some people by surprise a little. I think he's probably in the 15 to 25 pick range.

The DT's are better than I think most anticipated because a lot of them have had nice week.

Orakpo and Everette Brown are my favorites at DL.

I would be PSYCHED if we landed Malcolm Jenkins.

That linebacker from USC, or anybody from USC, right now ARE NOT worth a top 10 pick until after they outperform everybody at the Combine.

Not sure why there is alot of conversation about trading back in the draft. Sometimes I think the guy does it to save money or he is unsure how to pick in the first round (yes we have Rodgers, but we also have Harrell). Ted Thompson has to understand we only have some many slots on the roster. Every time he trades back he gains picks, which sometimes in the long run did nothing to help this ball club. The number #9 pick can be huge, if you know what is the right selection to make. Keep the pick and make the right selection, no tweeners get a stud.

I don't have any real disagreements with ANY of these recommendations...I AM still saying that if we can find a trade partner, we can convert this pick into two players, and possibly three. I would submit that the depth in this draft through the third round, coupled with our additional third round pick...
We could secure some real impact players with a trade back.

Some of these guys are moving up and down so many "big boards", right from mid-first round to the early third. I'm sure the Senior bowl and combine will start shaking things out, but that's illustrative of my point. There's an argument for a LOT of players in positions of need for us. I am VERY leery of eating up a 9th pick for a DT, for example, ESPECIALLY if/when we are moving to a 3-4...WHEN we could get at least two high quality trench players instead.

I know everyone wants an "impact" player, but just look at the movement I'm referring to. It either indicates a depth of talent or lack thereof, imo. I say the depth is there, as contrasted to some superstar sitting in the 9 hole.

So, I'm going 1350.

If we weren't switching to a 3-4, I'd say that this might be the year that Thompson doesn't trade back. We've got plenty of youth and plenty of depth now, which is what he wanted to accomplish. Now we need playmakers.

That is, if we were still a 4-3 team.

Now that we're switching to 3-4, who knows? We have more concrete needs - a big DT, bigger DEs, bigger OLBs.

Then again, this is Ted Thompson we're talking about, so I really have no idea what he'll do.

Couple that with the harsh truth that nothing screws up good scouting like a good combine and I'm even more clueless than I usually am (which is a feat, believe me).

But... if it were me, and the draft was tomorrow, I'd stay at #9 and take Everette Brown, Brian Orakpo, B.J. Raji or Peria Jerry - in that order of preference.

I know everybody is concentrating on defense this off season and for good reason, but I think we are all forgetting the fact that Tauscher is rehabbing a knee right now and is on the wrong side of thirty, and I'm sorry but I can't get out of my head the beat down that Clifton took in the Metrodome this season. If one of those 3 blue chip Left Tackles are sitting there at 9, don't we have to take him?

That is a very real possibility.. but look at the depth at OT in this draft..

In addition to the top 3.. you have

Eugene Monroe, Virgina.. some have him ranked right with the others.
William Beatty, UCONN, which is doing everything to show himself off in the Senior Bowl pre work.

That is five deep at Tackle.. think maybe one of them is still sitting on the board in the second for us? Maybe.

B.J. Raji is a man amongst boys at the Senior Bowl. There is no way I think anyone can justify taking Peria Jerry before Raji unless character concerns scare you off that much.

Completely agree that Raji should go ahead of Jerry.. no doubt, but with Raji dominating the Senior Bowl work I see no way in the world he is sitting at 9 for us. Seattle was decimated in the middle of the defense.. I personally think he makes it no further than that if he is still there then.

We shall very well see.. so many moving parts that it makes this an interesting draft..
