I did this post at the beginning of last year so I wanted to do it again. Driver is my favorite current Packer and last year, we posed the question of the possibility of Driver making the HoF.

I know. Long shot. He's never been a dominating WR, but one who came to work, played hard, and quietly rolled up a decent set of statistics.

He's still going to have to play a solid 3 or 4 years to be considered, especially since there are dominating WRs today that are tearing it up like Randy Moss, TO, Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, etc. These are the guys Driver will be compared to, and even in this list, the majority won't make the Hall. Moss and Harrison are shoe ins, and I'd bet titles of my car vs your car that TO will make it (as much as I absolutely hate the guy). But those are the only sure bets.

As of the end of the 2008 season, Donald Driver is 63rd all time in Receptions, 75th in Receiving Yards, and 144th in TDs. Those stats won't even put him in consideration if he retired today.

But let's just say '09 was an exact duplicate of '08 - 74 rcpts, 1012 yards, and 5 TDs. That would put him at 37th place in Receptions, 42nd in yards, and 111th TDs. That low TD total would keep him out fo shizzle and the 37th in receptions is still not enough.

What will it take to be considered? I'm thinking 3 more 1000 yard seasons. That would put him ahead of Michael Irvin (who also has the benefit of winning 3 SBs) in yards at around 17th place. The thing is his low TD total will really hurt him. Even if he matched his five TDs for the next 3 years, that puts him in only 66th place, which are far from HoF numbers by today's standards. He'll need to catch more than 5 TDs and start getting one or two double digit seasons. Can it be done? Yes, but historically, he's never had double digit seasons, only achieving 9 TDs (twice).

Keep in mind, today, it's a heck of a lot easier to rack up TDs because the rules favor the WR over the CB and S. Because of that, HoF judges won't even consider someone in 66th place in TDs unless they did something absolutely spectacular in their career. Even with those extra 15 TDs, he's still behind Mushin Muhammed who's not going to make the HoF.

I would like to have him make the HoF, but when I look at it objectively, I don't think he will.

Isaac Bruce seems to be somewhat of a longshot to get in (Or at least, in my eyes). He has played a year or five more, but he's just 3 year older. Driver would have to win a SB and rack up 7000 Yards, 37 TDs and about 450 receptions.

When you look at it like that, there's no way he'll make it. He does have the 60% catching balls over the middle and his toughness, but I don't know if that was enough. I mean, Bo Jackson, Lynn Swann, those are guys that can make up for their low yardage (and playing time) by their pure skill. As much as I like Donald, he just doesn't have that.

No. That's what I fear. Since he was never really dominating (No All-Pro years, only 3 Pro Bowls), never led the NFL in yards or TDs, etc., it would take winning at least one SB and some spectacular stats at post-30 years of age to make it.

Now, if we win back to back SBs and Driver gets double digit TDs, everything changes. The chance of that are pretty slim though. 😞

I have an issue with being inducted or even considered for any sports hall of fame whether it be baseball, football or any other sport.
The standards have been way too far diluted.
Being inducted into any hall of fame should be reserved for players that have been someody that has done somethin very excepyional.
Way too many players in their respective sports that are no more than average in their"greatness" have been allowed to enter in their respective sports.
Baseball is especially been a problem IMHO.

I don't agree with how they are elected, or who elects them.
I don't know the remedy for this.

Bottom line is that I don't think Donald Driver, as much as I respect his contributions to the Green Bay Packers, should be even be considered for the NFL hall of fame in Canton Ohio.

Tht's just my opinion.

Baseball has been the best in not letting people who don't deserve it in. They usually only let the best 1 or 2 players for their position in their time of play. Football and basketball however have been let in far too many players who don't deserve it and as much as I love Driver it is tough to make a case that he should make the hall.

Driver is without a doubt one of the toughest guys in the league. He plays hard all the time and does everything well, he will be in the Packers hall of fame and that is what matters to me. He is a Packer great and stands for exactly what the Packers stand for.

Yes, pretty much the only ones who will ever get to experience the greatness of Donald Driver are those of us who watch him every Sunday.

I will say this about him though, he does have a sort of "uniqueness" about him. He is not flashy or a showoff but he does stand out. There are a lot of great receivers around this era it seems who put up tremendous stats but very few I think are as fearless or have the all around toughness that Driver has. He is what I would call a "real" football player. The kind of guys who make the hall of fame what it is. Just my opinion though πŸ™‚

dfosterf (19h) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.

beast (5-Apr) : The 25th pick in the draft has been an offensive player since 2017, 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB, 1 OC
