This here is one of the major issues with the current CBA

The Players union pissed on the undrafted free agent kids coming into the league, signing for comparative peanuts and having to earn their way onto a roster and into visibility. Not many make impacts, but for the ones that do and outplay their contracts, they have little leverage in securing a fair competitive salary. The Union decided to protect the ridiculous money that the high drafted players in exchange for trapping these blue collar players.

Personally, if I am Williams or Grant, I demand to get a fair contract paid.. not blockbusters but fair market value contracts.

People complain about the Grant contract, it is incentive loaded, so Grant has to perform to earn some of the lucrative numbers in that deal..

Personally, if you take care of these types of players, the ones that earn their payday first with performance, you will reap the benefits of players actually choosing GB over some of the other in the UDFA rookie market.. where some of the hidden NFL gems come from

This is an extremely good post. As for me, I wasn't one of those that complained about Grant getting that contract, I merely wanted to point out the context in which he got it. In a way, Ted "caved". If you couple that "cave-in" with a potential "chip on a shoulder" due to the built-in inequities of the CBA and obscene $$$ for draft picks as you are alluding to, this has all the makings for being a much bigger deal in a few months than it is now. I don't know if you would call this the flip side of the coin, but I keep dwelling on the ridiculous money cornerbacks are commanding these days... I can't even figure out what a guy like Tramon is worth in this market, but I'm willing to wager that "fair market value" is one hell of a lot more than one might think on first blush.

I just want to go on record as saying this one gets ugly.

How many times does Ted Thompson need to show these agents that he will NOT pay a guy before he's proven himself but then when he does the new contract is at his door. GEEZ.

I cannot think of single Packer that just went out and played and let the rest take care of itself that wasn't rewarded with a new contract and extension as long as they were deserving.

Tramon can overcome the way the CBA works by going out and playing well and will only hurt himself with a holdout. The way good CB's are paid in this league the last thing he needs to worry about is money if he just goes out and plays like he can.

I compare it much to the Fielder deal with the Brewers.. you buy out their exclusive and restricted free agent deals with a competitive incentive laden salary and have it end a year after their restricted days are over.

The player remains hungry and productive, you still are getting value on said player and he is getting a decent payday, but has his eyes firmly affixed on his major payday once his contract is up and he is in his prime.

In addition to better slotted and financially responsible contracts for the highly drafted, this loophole needs to be closed so these blue collar players have some leverage in obtaining fair deals.

Maybe something like the baseballs arbitration for these young players. Third party neutral party setting the contract dollar based on performance.

What happens he suffers a major injury and never realizes his payday? The system is unfair... IMO.

Here is a guy that has proven himself by developing and playing well when called upon, but just because he was an UDFA he isn't entitled to a fair compensation comparatively.. especially when he outplays someone like a Jarrett Bush whom gets tendered a 1 million?

I think it is a flaw in the system.. that is all.

Well he forked out the huge contract to Grant after one year and how soon do we forget he forked out tons of cash on Rodgers after what 6 games? So i guess he isn't showing the agents to much. Sorry War just had to bring it up.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Technically, Grant was a little bit more than half a year, not even a full year. Remember he was a bench warmer? He got his first touches in Week 3 with 3 carries for 10 yards. Got 3 more carries in week 4. Zero in Week 5. Zero in Week 6. Week 7 a bye week. Week 8 he became our starter.
