You would have given Corey Williams the contract that Cleveland did or what the market dicating. He wasn't worth it. I don't disagree that the D-line depth was delapitaed. Harrell and Jolly were counted on to make up for losing Corey Williams, but that plan blew up in our face. It's pretty difficult to replace Cullen Jenkins though, and that was a freakish injury that hurt more than any other injury last year.

I do find it peculiar that some of you guys rip Ted Thompson on depth, but what depth was there when he took the job? Shouldn't some of your comments go to the previous GM once in a while, for not having any depth, and in some cases having players starting that wouldn't even have been on a decent team's roster.

We are going into Ted's 5th year, when are you going to lay the responsibility where it belongs. Jenkins and Kamp are our 2 best D-Lineman, they were here when Ted got here. What has he added to that? Pickett and Jolly maybe? They are both pretty inconsistent. If Ted was incapable of replacing Williams than yeah, I guess you pay him. Boy, I can't believe Bustin Harrell can't stay healthy.......Everyone knew he was injury prone.

I don't believe we should have paid Williams the coin he got but I do believe you better have a plan to replace him. Ted had a plan, but it was a failure.

It's Teds team, time to stop blaming MS. Ted has been trying to address the O-line for 4 years now. Coupled with the Harrell pick, and lack of FA activity I can't find much faith to put into him when it comes to fixing the D-Line. Another Multi-Year, ever-changing experiment for him is what it's going to be.

You know what, fair enough. I don't think this team is that far off. All you anti-Ted guys were pretty silent in the 13-3 year so I hope if we have a good season this year the bashing will finally stop. I think the team we have reflects 2007 more than 2008. How about we move on to 2009 with some positive outlook for a change?

Thank you. Pickett's been a rock - even last year while playing through a tough injury.

The Williams trade was almost universally lauded on the fan boards when it went down - nobody thought he was worth the money he wanted and I don't recall anything being said other than "good job". Now with hindsight, people are hopping back over the fence on that one. Weak.

The only piece of this that truly falls @ Thompson's feet is Harrel - it's pretty clear there was a lot of optimism in play about his health, where such optimism wasn't warranted.

Harrell has been useless so far, but he's 25, I think the new strength & conditioning coach suits him better, and I think the 3-4 DE suits him better than DT. The window is closing and closing FAST for him, but he has one last chance to squeak out a career in the NFL. I'd say the chances of it happening are at about 20-25%.

ILike - It's not that people are hopping back over the fence on Williams. The mistake was that Ted Thompson thought Bustin could replace Williams. That's the mistake.

In the last 2 years we had Williams, he was the ONLY DT in the NFL who had 7.5+ sacks each year.

Now don't get me wrong, Williams was seen as one of those people who once he got the big paycheck, he'd think he wouldn't have to work any more. But we needed to replace him with someone who would be on the field. That's where the mistake was made.

Hopefully it will be corrected in '09.

Well, I rather doubt he was counting on Harrell alone - I think he expected Jolly to take another step and for guys like Cole to also step up. To be fair, maybe he did think Harrell would be ready as well, but IMO he wasn't expecting Harrell to step in and rock.

All that said, obviously his expectations - be they for Harrell, Jolly or anyone else - were wrong. As it turns out, we did need Williams. But I don't believe anyone knew that at the time, and I remember no concerns being voiced; just "hey, that was a good deal."

In hindsight it was obviously a bad move - I'm certainly not disputing that, but at the time nobody thought so, or at least I don't recall seeing anything to that effect.

I did voice concern over it. Williams got a huge deal, no doubt. Was he worth it, probably not. However, I knew the depth behind him was average and Harrell was a bust. I could have told you that on Draft Day.

The problem is we play this game with player's worth all the time. The bottom line is NONE of these guys deserve what they are paid. The market determines their value. If we sit back and say "overpaid" we run a dangerous game of having to consistently depend on young inexperienced role players.

dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
