Penalties are from lack of discipline.

That is certainly a truism, but what about, for one example, when you are getting out-physicaled by some beast of a DE/DT (bigger or faster) and the alternative is to allow your QB to get blind-side struck by a freight train? You just might grab you a little jersey in that scenario, I would think. Or how about when the play before was one of the "ole'" plays, your man beat you, and now you are trying to avoid a repeat...You are trying to get an "edge" on the same behemoth bastard...You just might be real quick off that line, maybe "too quick". I harken back to the start of our 1st game. I think our offensive line knew they better be moving and shaking against that Vikes D line, and they were "jumpy". What an absolutely terrible start to our season for Aaron in that pressure packed situation. I was angry, and my knee jerk reaction was probably in agreement with the lack of discipline argument, but I really lean towards the mano on mano problem I am attempting to describe.

I think loosening the reins would have gotten us at least a few more wins.

SEVEN of our ten losses were by 4 points or less.

You can debate all you want about how our defense couldn't make a stop when it needed to, but if just one drive in each game had ended in a touchdown instead of a field goal, we likely would have won 4 or 5 of those games...

My thoughts 69 exactly, at the end of last year. I can not tell you the number of times last year I was going Comanche when the field goal team hit the field after conservative play calling, or not going for it on 4Th and short with the lead.

HOWEVER- After the season was over I began to think it was a good idea in the development of young Aaron. Perhaps they did not want him to be put under that much pressure and face the wrath that would have come in his first year after GOD left behind center.

How many times have we seen a young QB ruined by being pressed. The fact is they did every thing right in the slow development of Chico so why ruin it. (Although I think he could have had more late game snaps when Brett was starting.)

Chico was under enough pressure after the Brett soap opera.

Slow and steady may have been the right course.

I am hoping this year the staff is hell bent for the kill, and will gut that carcass right away and not stand around patting each other on the back.

We all questioned his playcalling at one point or another. But I don't know that it was more or less of an impact than some of the injuries and poor defense we played.

What if he had turned Aaron loose and he threw more picks? Then would we have said, if we played a little more conservative, would it have had it been like this?

This is the thing though. We had Aaron's Red Zone stats discussed here earlier and someone actually printed them. I don't have them handy but his QB Rating was well over 100 in the Red Zone.

Let the kid loose. He will destroy the opponent.

Why the **** was Mike McCarthy holding him back last year?

You don't go run, run, pass in the red zone when you got a QB who has a 100+ QB Rating in the Red Zone, and your running game isn't that good. That run, run, pass BS costed us at least one or two games and I'm being conservative. Realistically it was probably 3 or 4.

Sink or swim. I'd put my money on Aaron swimming, and would give you 10 to 1 odds. That's how confident I was in the kid after what he showed me in '08.

Now in my last reply, I put Aaron had a 100+ QB Rating in the Red Zone. Then pass the damn ball. You want to help Aaron's self-esteem? OK, I'll tell you how to help Aaron's self-esteem. How about starting his first year as a starter with a WINNING record?

I think injuries and coaching had to do with the record more than any other factor. Not just McCarthy and his bonehead calls once in awhile, but Bob Sanders and his lack of aggression and poor defensive playcalling as well.

This is one of the reasons why I think the team is going to be at least a little better this year because to me Dom Capers is a far better coach than Bob Sanders. I have nothing against Sanders, but he didn't get the job done whereas I think Capers is a much more capable coach.

Coaching overall was horrible last season. Sanders was the scapegoat, and yeah he was bad, but McCarthy was far from blameless.

The missed field goals in the red zone, after McCarthy shut down the offense, was the football gods saying, "Coach, this isn't how the game should be played." Running, behind Clifton, on 3rd and 11 in the red zone? Pathetic. We played scared. And I HATE that.

And while we improved on penalties the second half of the season, there were still way too many yellow flags. And that's all on the coaching.

Thanks, but I was surprised you wrote that originally as you are as big as a fan of Aaron as anyone here (except his father - Cal).

Also, you are a results driven man. You know first hand what winning and losing have on a man's psyche. Winning is a rush. It's better than sex. Losing is the opposite. If Salma Hayek right now came up to me and said "Zombieslayer, I'm giving you a choice of having sex with me or being an Assistant Coach on the Super Bowl team in '09," I'd take the latter. And no, I'm not gay (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Winning really is everything. I've watched your youtube links and enjoyed what you had to say, and learned a lot about motivation. If ANYTHING is a motivator, it is winning.

So once again, I'm surprised you wrote that as it's completely out of your character.
