What I'm hoping for is that the waiting LBs where part of Sanders' gameplan.

I know it sounds weird, but Sanders was a D-line guy. He expects a high level of production from his big guys up front. If they can stop the run and get to the passer, you can drop the LBs back a bit. They can see the play develop before them and get to the flats or pick up the shallow zone.

Now, what I'm hoping for is that Sanders just didn't adjust again. With our D-line playing on a very low level, we needed the LBs to come up and stop the run and just let our secondary take over a little in pass coverage. They proved that they where able to do that.

That could also explain why Howard looks so amazing everytime he comes into the game. He's the only one attacking the line. Maybe while he wasn't supposed to that often.

I know, it's a long shot, and a big one at that, but it's always fun to theorize a little.

Remember how excited we were the last time the defensive coordinator changed? Side note, I am impressed JSOnline still has the source link valid.

I thought it was interesting that the Packers played such a simple scheme that, despite the fact they were good at it, was too predictable for opposing offenses.

By the end of his tenure, people were saying that his scheme was too complicated for our players to implement but at the same time too predictable to thwart opposing offenses.

Makes me wonder if history will repeat itself.

You've got to adapt to the times. It's two fold. On one hand, the CBA really cuts down on time. On the other, and this is the most important part, Dom didn't have the pieces he needed to make the defense work. As an aside to that, injuries/unavailability made for too many moving parts. From a philosophical perspective, the biggest difference might me Pettine's priority on pass defense over run defense.

Like was said, you have to change with the times.
Once it was obvious what our D was going to do, Capers SHOULD have switched things up.

Let's recall the situation back then. Jim Bates wanted the HC position, wanted it bad. Probably deserved a shot, but Ted had to do the right thing by the team. He needed a QB guru to develop Aaron Rodgers.

Bates wouldn't come back. Irrc, There had been like a 4 year musical chairs parade at DC at the time, so they wanted to get some continuity, especially for some of the younger players. Bates wouldn't come back, so they went with Sanders, who was a Jim Bates protege.

Bates' system was pretty vanilla, 4-3 man up and beat your guy type deal. It was a very good system, with Jim Bates running it. Not so much with the even more vanilla Sanders.
