I fail to understand the hostility towards him..

Some of us have been sick of the man's personality and tactics for years. This isn't a new thing and has nothing to do with current histrionics. I've been looking forward to the end of the Favre era at least since 4th and 26, though admittedly my antipathy didn't take deep root until some time later. I do know I was damn excited about the drafting of Aaron Rodgers, because it signaled light at the end of the tunnel (actually, I'd been hoping they'd draft Philip Rivers). I also know I'm not alone because I've met other people who say the same things as I do.

I know it's hard for a lot of people to understand (not that I'm saying you're one of them), but Packers fan does not equate to Favre fan, and "hostility," as you term it, toward his antics is no reflection upon one's feelings for the team one dearly loves.

At this point, I seriously don't care where or when or what Brett Favre does. He retired from the Packers. He did well here. He is gone. At this point, it has nothing to do with the way I feel about him one way or the other as a Packer.

I am glad some other teams got the distraction this year. I wish him no ill will (other than I would wish any other Viking), but I am far past the point of caring about what Brett is doing.

Basically, it's a "whatever" to me.

WHOEVER is QB'ing the Vikings i hope sucks. Because if the Vikings do well, MY team does not.
I was a Packer fan a LONG time before i was a BF fan.

I respect the "whatever" -- but I don't completely understand it. When we see Brett line up against Green Bay in a Vikings uniform, it'll be stomach turning. I really think that.

Right now my attitude is, well, it's complicated. I'm a little peeved, because this is now two summers of unsubstantiated rumors and circus media coverage. Not all that is Brett's fault. But apparently his public word isn't worth crap. How many times can you go back and forth? He retired, then he wanted back, then he retired, then he said this time it was for good, then he entertained an offer, then he couldn't make a decision and the situation dragged out even further, then he retired ... then he agreed to said offer.

Is it really so confusing why people are "hostile" towards him? And BTW -- I don't see anyone calling for his head. If the nature of some comments seems a little emotional, take into account this news broke today. This is still fresh.

Ultimately I say bring it on. Bring it on Brett, you're a Viking now. I'll be focused on my Packers, I'll root them on. But when I see you take the field at Lambeau AGAINST us, I'll want to throw up.

And another thing -- we're gonna see a LOT more "And the snap, Favre hands it off to Peterson..." than we will "And Brett drops back and heaves it downfield ..."

Just smack me if I'm diggin' up a grave here, but doesn't this situation just REINFORCE the Packers decision? Say what you will for how they HANDLED it last year -- that's a separate story. What I'm concerned with is the actual decision to move on, to go with Rodgers.

Think about the continual distraction we'd have if we brought him back. Would he be coming back this year? Would he miss training camp? What about next season? And here's the money ball: where is Aaron Rodgers during this hypothetical mess? I can tell you his contract would be up without having started a game.

You are right, he wasn't going to be able to play in Green Bay. But from a standpoint of examining where Green Bay is today -- the changes they've made, the transition to Rodgers -- would we do it over? I don't think so.

Even a Vikings Super Bowl ring won't change that. It was the right call to move on. It's August 18th -- preseason has already started -- and finally the Vikes got their answer. I don't want that distraction.

[...BTW, I'm not trying to be argumentative or combative in this discussion. Just wanted to make that clear. Tone is difficult to portray on the interwebs...]

The specific play, nothing much. But we still had a chance to win that game in overtime and it was our QB's throw that ended our chance.

Mostly it's just a shame, though. It's been unbelievable to watch this guy trash his legacy like this.

Whoa!! Putting the cart in front of the horse are we? Let's let the guy play at least half a season before we anoint the Vikings championship winners.

edit, if they win? Not his on field legacy. His legacy as a man, has been tainted, in my opinion.

You're right. What could I possibly be referring to?

Playing a game so many would play for free. Walking away. Coming back. Walking away, tip toe back, walk away. Coming back.

Again, his legacy as a man with me has been tainted. I've always considered Brett one of the most surefire straight shooting guys around. He contradicted himself countless times making it hard look at him the same way. It has nothing to do with the uniform he wears or wore. It's things he's said, then contradicted, then contradicted again.

I'm not talking about things like him saying he'd never play for another team. Yeah, that bothered me, but I don't hold that against him because ... things change.
