I know that for most people it's, or Rodgers, or Favre right now

The best thing Rodgers got from being behind Favre was a chance to take snaps with the 1st team a lot since Favre didn't want to.

I think I've read that Favre mellowed quite a bit after his initial anger at the Rodgers selection. I seem to remember Favre and Rodgers having that 'competition' throwing the football into nets in the corner of the endzone.

I think this is something that is misconceived by many.

Brett was not angry by the selection of Rodgers. Would he rather have had a OL or Defensive help with that pick? Yes, but Brett is not stupid, he understands rookies take time to develop.

He feared Rodgers (and any other backup QB on the roster). Brett has repeatedly stated that he's one play away from losing his job. That play, being an injury. He saw how fast Majik lost his starting job. That's another reason Brett refused to come out of games during injury. Fear of being REPLACED. He's even said this in recent years, as well as his book.

He understood how things worked, football is a business. It was the fear of KNOWING what COULD happen that drove him to legendary status. He never got complacent in his position with the team regardless of how great he was doing.

Fear is a helluva driving factor in us all. If we knew we wouldn't crash or get ticketed for going 90mph on the highway, would we? Yes, because we do not fear any consequence. Do we? Most do not, because of the fear of crashing or getting ticketed.

Rodgers is more secure than he was. Maybe arrogant is more accurate?

Fact is, (ok in my opinion) Brett felt a minute helping his backup was a minute lost making himself better. I think it should be known that Brett did not turn down questions from QB's. But he wasn't going to go hunt QB's down to help them out.

It must be galling for the 49ers GM who picked Smith over Rodgers. The way things have shaken out it looks like a totally busted pick and when compared to the success of Aaron one wonders how he could have made such a blunder.

But arguably had Rodgers been thrown into the fire in San Fran and Smith rode the pine in Green Bay we could have ended up with a similar result albeit with different individuals. After all, Rodgers stunk pretty bad his 1st (and 2nd) pre seasons which suggests had he had to start in San Fran he could have blown up horribly.

It's often a thankless task being a GM.

Oh, for crap sake.

Yes, he learned from Favre. Of course he did. Yes, he benefitted from having 3 years to sit and learn while he adjusted to the speed of the pro game.

Yes, all of that is true.

But now he's a good QB and he plays for the Packers. We're thus far enjoying something very few teams' fans ever get - a lack of drop-off after losing a franchise QB.

So maybe we should just, you know, enjoy that instead of conjuring new ways to insult him (Hazer, of course) or contorting ourselves to give the previous QB (who plays for Minnesota now, in case anyone missed that) the credit? It's a thought.

This is the most important line in the entire thread. Most teams lose their Franchise QB and their window immediately closes for years. Our window never closed and it looks to be open for many years to come. Oh how our fellow North teams must envy our luck. All 3 teams hadn't had a reliable QB in years. Albeit things have changed over the summer, bears with the upgrade of cutler, and the vikes riding the last fibers in favre's arm, they are not as bad off as they are used to. a year from now the vikings will be back in the same problem though. poor lions hahaaaaa

I hear this a lot, and I'm not convinced it's true. Over at 49ers.com, they seem to think that in fact Mike McCarthy wanted Rodgers all along, but that he was overruled. That his public declarations of wanting Smith were him just McCarthy toeing the party line. It is odd, if he didn't want Rodgers, that he later accepted a head coaching job on a team where Rodgers was clearly the heir apparent.

It's often a thankless task being a GM.

Granted. But it's not as though there were not warning signs for any GM to take into consideration. Smith played a spread offense in college, and historically, quarterbacks from spread systems have not done well on the NFL level. By contrast, Rodgers excelled in a West Coast Offense on the collegiate level, so he was well prepared for his transition to the professional game.
