Found this little article interesting, it's about Dietrich-Smith and Swain finding out that they made the team. Makes me hope Ruvell finds another team and gets to keep playing.

"Swain got word he was safe from Ruvell Martin, the guy he was competing with the final receiver spot. After Martin was released, he called Swain to congratulate him on making the team.

Thats how good of a man Ruvell Martin is, Swain said. He said he wanted to give me an early congratulations.

Wow, that is amazing of Ruvell to do and shows his character. It is always tough to see a Packer go but it doesn't really effect our offense at all. If anything, it saves us some dollars and actually adds to our offense.

Finley is going to make it tough if we ever run a 5 WR formation with him in it.

Is Swain gonna get a normal number, or is he gonna still be 16?

That is an interesting question. If Swain were to line up as a defensive back, would he have to change his jersey? There are situations in which the NFL requires a player who doesn't normally wear a number eligible to receive to change jerseys before lining up on the line of scrimmage.

If Swain lines up of defense, we're in ALOT of trouble.
I think the rule is if you line up in a position for which your number is ineligible, you have to report to the referee every single play, like a "tackle eligible" type scenario.

Hmm, maybe it's in college you have to change your jersey.

EDIT: Nope, it's in Canadian football:

In the Canadian game a player who wears an ineligible number may make himself an eligible receiver if the referee grants him permission to change his uniform to an eligible number at the team's bench.

Numbers in the teens are considered to be "normal" numbers for WR's, just like numbers in the 80's. Some historical examples are Lance Allworth (#19 for the Chargers) and Gene Washington (#18 for the Redskins). Numbers in the teens were extremely out of vogue for WR's for a lot of years, but they have had a resurgence lately.

Anyway, playing DB does not change things. It would be the same as Troy Brown (#82) playing DB for the Patriots a few years back. Swain did a decent job against Tennessee backups, though I don't expect to ever see him line up as a DB again. It only happened because of a weird injury situation.

Yeah, his number is allowed, but I don't think it's considered "normal" per se. It's more of a thing for guys who want to "get noticed."
In Swain's case, it might even be a thing where there were no other numbers available when he went to the equipment room. Just wondering.

Swain catches on

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/57902072.html

I think we may actually be deeper at WR now then we were last year. Swain has made big progress the past 12 months, he has a ton of upside and we dont yet know his ceiling. Ruvell, at 27, probably had reached that on our team playing #5.
Also Jennings, Jones and Nelson are all a year closer to their peak and should all be better this year.
